    • Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI)
      • June 13th is the tentative date for the workshop, pending IFSI’s official confirmation.
      • Preservation Committee members are considered attendees and take up slots for the workshop.  All members wanted to attend.  Members volunteered to come and just observe if there were not enough slots to accommodate everyone.  Registration will be monitored. Committee member attendance will be considered again in May.
      • The U of I was contacted to see if they could provide shelving for the burn demonstration.  If they can't, shelving will have to secured from another source.
      • So far Melanie, Bonnie, and maybe Susan will be able to provide books, newspapers, a ring binder, a/v materials including LPs and 45s for the burn demonstration.
      • Bonnie shared a draft of a Save-the-Date announcement she wrote for the workshop. The announcement will be posted once we have a confirmed date for the workshop.
    • University of Chicago Open House
      • The date for the Open House is April 20, 2018.  The Save-the-Date announcement was published in the December newsletter.
      • The Committee tabled discussion of the program timeline.
      • There is a limit of 30 attendees as the Preservation Department at the Oriental Institute can only handle 15 people at a time.  While at the Oriental Institute, one group will tour while the other views its exhibits.
    • Future Workshops
      • Book repair as a part of a collections care series of workshops was discussed.  Past survey results indicated there was an interest in book repair and scrapbooks.  It was decided that constructing protective enclosures was something that could be taught.  Since the last collection care workshop was given in 2012, there is a potential for a new audience.
      • The feasibility of webcasting a book repair workshop was discussed but the technology has been inconsistent and results mixed in the past. Attempting to record the workshop and later sharing the recording was considered.
      • The location for the 2019 workshop was discussed.
      • A subcommittee was formed to plan the workshop with Bonnie Parr acting as chair.  Members: Mary Burns, Susan Howell, Meghan Ryan, Melanie Schoenborn.
  • Annual Project: Communicating the Value of Preservation
    • Blogs are to be submitted to Nicole and Elizabeth by January 22 for publication on the 26th.
    • Bonnie's blog was posted in December.  Anne and Jen’s blogs will be posted in January.  Mary is on track for her February blog post.

Decisions

  • Mary Burns was confirmed to take minutes.
  • The December minutes were approved.
  • The IFSI agenda and timeline were approved.
  • The meeting adjourned at 11 am.
  • The CARLI Preservation Workshop for 2019 will focus on constructing protective enclosures.

Tasks Assigned

  • A subcommittee chaired by Bonnie Parr was formed to plan the CARLI Preservation Workshop for 2019. Members: Mary Burns, Susan Howell, Meghan Ryan and Melanie Schoenborn.
  • Everyone: Be on the lookout for items to donate to the IFSI workshop, including books and shelving units.
  • Nicole will ask IFSI if they can hold materials for the workshop if they are sent through ILDS.
