  • Minutes taken by Chris Sweet.
  • CARLI staff will coordinate a meeting for the Open Pedagogy Workshop instructors.
  • CARLI staff will schedule with Dan and Kim a summer session of the OER Course: Understanding and Promoting Open Educational Resources.
  • CARLI staff will schedule meetings to Review the OER Faculty Workshop.
  • CARLI staff will schedule the September OER Faculty Workshop.

Decisions

  • Minutes from March 7 meeting were approved.
  • The Committee will not hold OER Office Hours over the summer.
  • During the summer, committee members will review the OER Course content and if needed update.

Announcements

  • Member Announcements:
    • Dorinne Banks (Adler University) She will be giving multiple OER Faculty Workshops in April.
    • Kim Hale (Columbia College Chicago) Jeanne Petrolle, English and Creative Writing faculty member was a member of an OER Panel and talked about transitioning from a print textbook to an OER textbook.
    • Dee Anna Phares (Northern Illinois University) NIU’s Leading Impact Program gave out its inaugural awards for the highest percent of low or no cost courses offered during the academic year. Awards were Departmental Achievement ($2000), Departmental Honorable Mention ($1000), and Departmental Outstanding Effort ($500). The top prize went to the a department with more than 73% of its courses being labelled low or no cost. Hoping to continue the program next year.
  • CARLI Announcements:
    • Upcoming CARLI events: April 27, Collection Management Committee Open Discussion on Building Diverse and Inclusive Collections; May 4, Public Services Committee, Inclusive and Accessible Public Services: An Open Discussion.

Discussion

  • Continuing Education:
    • OER Course: Understanding and Promoting Open Educational Resources:
      • So far low enrollment for May course. We will continue to recruit and see how enrollment goes. Discussed whether to host additional OER sections.
      • Dan and Kim would be available to teach a summer course.
    • OER Faculty Workshop:
      • All scheduled sessions have been completed.
      • The committee noted that past summer OER Faculty Workshops have had low enrollment and discussed whether an additional summer session would be worthwhile.
      • The committee decided to focus on offering a class in September. Kim and Lauren volunteered.
      • The committee discussed updating and revision of the course.
      • Dan, Lauren, Kim, Dorinne, and Dee Anna volunteered to revise the course material this summer.
      • CARLI staff will help coordinate.
    • OER Office Hours:
      • March session led by Lauren went well.
      • On April 20, Chris will lead a Devil’s Advocate / OER Counterarguments session and Catherine Galarza-Espino will take notes.
      • Christian Norton will take notes on May 9.
      • The committee decided there will not be any summer office hours, but we will begin soliciting topics and volunteers for the fall.
  • Review of CARLI Open Education Week Events:
    • Speakers and discussion panels went well. Not many contributions to the Padlet.
    • Recordings will be uploaded to CARLI Open Education week webpage.
    • Consider organizing a student panel for 2024 and re-cap student survey data.
  • Student Survey:
    • CARLI Board suggested some revisions which were adopted.
    • Amendments approved by IRB.
    • Reviewed draft message to CARLI Governing Directors.
  • Open Pedagogy Workshop:
    • The first iteration was delivered to NIU faculty on March 31.
    • Overall good feedback on the workshop and a few suggestions for improving the next iteration. CARLI offering on April 25 at 1 PM is now full.
    • OER committee members may try to meet for a brief discussion prior to the 25th.
  • CARLI Support for OEN Certificate in OER Librarianship:
    • A few CARLI members that were accepted didn’t need reimbursement.
  • CARLI Support for Creative Commons Certificate Program:
    • Still space in the program, CARLI continues to promote this opportunity.
  • DOE Open Textbook Pilot Grant: Illinois SCOERs: Support for the Creation of Open Educational Resources:
    • Michele has been setting up accounts and training sessions with LibreTexts for Illinois SCOERs participants.
    • There were more proposals than funding for Round 3.
  • House Bill 4022
    • Chris shared a summary email from SPARC. This bill may not be brought up in this legislative session. In general, a very exciting development for OER and for academic libraries in Illinois. As the email from SPARC noted, clearer definitions of OER would be helpful.
