  • Elizabeth Clarage will edit minor typos in the minutes.

Announcements

  • Member Announcements:
    • Tineka Scalzo (City Colleges of Chicago): Funding has been obtained for OER projects, and a call for proposals went out to faculty.
    • Christina Norton (Bradley University): Mini-grants have been awarded to two recipients.
    • Dee Anna Phares (Northern Illinois University): Initiating an OER program and have 6 applicants. NIU will also be recognizing low/no cost courses in catalog and have lots of interest from faculty to get on the list. Their OER program will be recognizing departments, with a small monetary award, with the most low/no cost courses, and individual faculty members with no/low cost classes.

        • These will feed into CARLI’s strategic priorities for the coming years.
        • This is the place to let CARLI know that you want OER to continue to be a priority going forward.
    • CARLI had a conversation with folks from California about Textbook Affordability funding. Their process may not fit our circumstances. Lobbying around where funding can go, Inclusive Access programs are included here. They had success organizing leading up to the funding being included in the state budget.
    • Open Education Conference is next month and conflicts with the Illinois Library Association Conference. Early Bird pricing is available through September 15th, at $75 and provides access to the program recordings.

Discussion

  • Nicole sent an email asking for volunteers for the Understanding and Promoting OER programs, and CARLI will work to schedule with instructors. It is likely that instructors will only teach once. Please put your name in where you are available.
  • September Faculty Workshop 67 registrants, 35 attendees, 20 attendees were faculty that select textbooks. Good engagement and questions from attendees
  • Additional faculty workshop in January and February, sign-ups are in the same place as the Understanding and Promoting OER sign-up.
  • Christina Norton will lead the November Office Hour.
  • Tineka will take minutes for September Office Hour.
  • Dan or Catherine will take minutes for November.
  • Dee Anna will facilitate a January Office Hour.
  • Open Education Week Ideas:
    • OER Success Stories
    • Professional Development Alliance Program
    • Program with a student panel
    • Illinois SCOERs subgrant recipients will do some programming, various dates and times tbd
    • Share out any archived recordings of relevant OER programming
      • OER Gameshow potentially
    • How can we get baseline understanding to faculty members through some of this programming?
    • OER Show and Tell, get faculty sharing what they are using across disciplines
    • Programming around inclusive access
    • Programming on low cost/affordability approaches
      • Create a padlet around this topic
      • Padlet could be used in all related programming
    • Licensing issues, licenses changing from unlimited use to needing to purchase again
    • OER Success stories is a good snapshot to get annually
  • There are four responses to the Creative Commons survey. Staff will get the survey out to the CARLI-OER email list. There is no closing date on the survey yet.
  • CARLI staff are working on appropriate approvals for advocacy plan.
  • Nicole sent a survey to the student survey subcommittee members looking to find dates for first meeting. Let Nicole know if you’d like to be on the committee.
  • Student panel with SPARC will likely be moved to the spring.
  • Elizabeth suggested adding the following to the agenda for next month: conversation about hosting a working session for the Open Illinois OER Commons Hub. Each participant can flesh out their Open Illinois page and start populating it.
  • OEN Certificate program application announcement just went out from OTN. Staff shared a letter to the CARLI Program Planning Committee to ask for support for up to 5 CARLI governing member librarians to participate in the program. Kim Hale moved that we vote to approve the letter of support. Chris Sweet asked if CARLI could just have this as a yearly award. Elizabeth will ask if this is possible. The committee voted to approve sending the letter to the CARLI Program Planning Committee. Kim Hale and Tineka Scalzo said they would write something up to highlight their experience with the program.
  • Illinois SCOERs: Michele Leigh met with all the Illinois SCOERs subgrant awardees individually. All the awardees are starting work on their projects. Some upcoming workshops will be available later this fall. Events are happening in next few weeks around the second round of applications. She is looking at publishing formats and will hopefully have some information about that coming up.
