  • July minutes approved.
  • Minute takers assigned alphabetically, with the exception of Dan and Dorinne swapping places.

Tasks Assigned

  • Minutes taken by Tineka Scalzo.
  • Review OER website pages and suggest changes. Dan will create list of pages in Box and committee members will self-select pages to review. Complete by February 20, 2023.
  • Dan will email committee members not present for their availability for a monthly committee meeting.
  • Elizabeth will contact Anne to see what progress has been made on putting together a SPARC + students panel to determine next steps.

Announcements

  • Member Announcements:
    • Christina Norton (Bradley University): OER mini-grants were announced; Christina presented on Open Pedagogy; and the OER Community of Practice was revived on campus.
    • Dee Anna Phares (Northern Illinois University): Starting this fall, faculty can mark their courses as low- or no-cost, which can be used to filter in course searches. Faculty awards for OER were announced. There is a cohort of full- and part-time faculty trying to adopt and adapt OER.
    • Tineka Scalzo (City Colleges of Chicago): Campus team participating in the AAC&U’s Institute on OER. Faculty stipends expect to continue.
    • Dan Matthews (Moraine Valley Community College): Nursing staff are interested in applying for an Illinois SCOERs grant.
    • Kim Hale (Columbia College Chicago): Kim is a new member of the Illinois State Library Advisory Committee, serving as the Academic Librarian representative.
  • CARLI Announcements:
    • Committee members have been subscribed to the OER Committee email list. The CARLI-OER email list is for the wider CARLI community. If committee members may self-subscribe on the CARLI website.
    • Box is the collaboration space used for committee work. N.b., If your institution previously had Box, but no longer subscribes, you will not be able to sign up using your institutional email address.
    • Nicole, Elizabeth, and Michele were accepted to present on Open Illinois at the Open Education Conference.
    • Upcoming conversation with California staff to discuss the $150 million funding for the creation of OER in California.
    • New hires at CARLI: Marisa Tolbert, E-Resources Library Services Coordinator and Martin Kong, User Services Library Services Coordinator. Systems Services position is TBD. Michele is now a permanent employee, rather than grant-funded.
    • Professional Development Alliance: CARLI + 9 other consortia collaborate to offer continuing education. Each consortium strives to offer one session per month. These opportunities are shared on CARLI calendar and email lists. The sessions are free to all members.

Discussion

  • Discussion of future committee meeting frequency and days of the week. Members present used when2meet to share availability. Best times: 1st Mondays, 10-11:30; 1st, 2nd, or 4th Tuesdays, 11:30-1; or 1st, 3rd, or 4th Fridays, 12-1:30.
    • Dan will email those who were absent to finalize a standing meeting day and time.
  • During the review of the committee’s charge, there were questions about how DEI is incorporated into our work. DEI was added to the committee’s charge last year. Issues of accessibility, affordability, and open pedagogy are areas where DEI and OER overlap. We will keep working to center these priorities in our professional development, workshops, and advocacy.
  • Plan to update OER website: fix links, updated materials, suggestions for improvement.

    • Committee members review; plan to discuss two pages at each meeting. Complete by February 20, 2023 in preparation for Open Education Week in March. Dan will share with committee members a document for all to select areas of the website to review.
  • Continuing Education
    • OER Course: Understanding and Promoting Open Educational Resources (2 instructors + CARLI staff)
      • Volunteers: Dee Anna, Dorinne, Chris, Dan, Tineka
      • Dates: 2x in December, tentatively Tuesday and Wednesday sessions; February, May (possibility of second session), and summer 2023 TBD
    • OER Faculty Workshop (2 instructors + CARLI Staff)
      • Volunteers: Christina, Chris, Kim, Tineka

        • September 8, 12:00-2:00 p.m. (Amber and Dan)
        • January 2023, 2x February 2023
    • OER Office Hours: informal, monthly discussions on topics of interest. Plan to continue taking general notes to share out afterward. Committee agreed that having links in the notes was helpful. Discussion of opening these sessions to non-librarians. If we make them open, it may be helpful to ask participants to introduce themselves and share their role before beginning discussions so we have a sense of everyone’s position. CARLI advertises to librarians. Advertising to faculty and / or administrators would need to come from committee members.

  • OEN Certificate in OER Librarianship Program
    • The committee has proposed subsidizing CARLI Librarian participation in the past to the CARLI Program Planning Committee.
    • Before the committee can propose CARLI support for the program, the OEN needs to call for participants. At this time, we are waiting for details from OEN.
  • Creative Commons Certificate Bootcamp
    • 10-week course, $500
      • Discount as part of Midwest Higher Ed. Compact (10%?)
      • Offer scholarships for members?
    • Elizabeth completed the program and shared details/logistics
      • 6-10 hours/week
      • Cohort leader to support participants
      • Create openly-licensed materials to share; ideally these are relevant to your work and can be useful later.
      • 90/100 required to earn the certificate
  • OER Advocacy
    • Advocacy 101 Training recap
      • Lobbying elected officials to advocate for OER.
      • Most successful when politicians hear from their constituents.
      • Bring consistent messaging.

    • Anne created a CARLI version and sent for review on 8/22. Reaching out to Secretary of State for academic library grants as part of appropriations. Currently, these are only given to public and school libraries.
    • Provide feedback asap. Pending approval from CARLI’s leaders.
  • Statement to Illinois College Textbook Affordability Task Force
    • Public Comment and Endorsement is still open.
  • Student Outreach
