Meeting Overview:

During the morning portion of the meeting, Michael Norman provided an overview on linked data and the BibFrame and Schema.org initiatives. In the afternoon, the members developed an outline for the RFP, categorizing different functional requirements according to “the jobs to be done.” The outline will provide a framework for organizing the specifications and scoring of the RFP, as well as for the working groups that will be called to help write those specifications.

Decisions:

  • Top level categories for the RFP included the following:
    • Implementing
    • Connecting
    • Working
      • Selecting
      • Acquiring
      • Describing
      • Sharing
      • Reporting
      • Knowledge Bases
    • Innovating
  • Areas that still need consideration, as they possibly stretch across multiple domains:
    • Workflow management
    • Balance across global, consortial, and local aspects of functionality
    • Staff user experience
    • Administration of policies, profiles, mapping, etc.
  • The Task Force will develop the first set of specifications from this outline, focusing on the Connecting group at its next meeting.

Announcements:

  • Kris announced that the December meeting has been moved to December 4 in Chicago. Frances McNamara of the University of Chicago will be present to share information about the University’s implementation of Kuali OLE.  Task Force members needing lodging in Chicago may look to Club Quarters.
  • Susan elaborated on the Board’s position regarding discovery services relative to the RFP effort. From the beginning, this RFP has been viewed this as a means to replace Voyager: i.e., the staff operations system. If the Task Force is vehement that we need to do an RFP for a discovery system, the TF can send a recommendation to the Board for a separate effort. Susan and Kris reiterated that we cannot score anything for which we do not provide specifications.
  • Kris mentioned a session that will happen during the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Chicago. RMG hosts a panel session, typically on Friday afternoon, featuring CEOs from from LMS and content vendors.

Tasks assigned:

  • Ted will post the whiteboard pictures to Basecamp.
  • Kris will get input from CARLI staff on the Implementing category, using information about practices and expectations that have worked (or not) previously.
  • Ted and Kris will improve upon the whiteboard drafts of the different major categories and the included jobs to be done.
