  • Minutes of the August 23, 2013 meeting were approved prior to the meeting.
  • The Instruction Committee decided to hold three webinars each focusing on a different topic about assessment.  
    • Topics and presenters:
      • What and how do you assess? -Devin Savage (tentatively)
      • How to write for assessment/developing rubrics. -Lisa Hinchliffe
      • How do you interpret the data? -Jen-Chien Yu
    • Final dates will be dependent on the speakers but webinars are tentatively scheduled for the weeks of November 4th, November 18th, and December 9th.  
    • Preferred time slot is between 10 A.M. and 2 P.M.
    • Webinars may be 30-45 minutes in length with time for Q & A.
  • The Instruction Committee will postpone the CARLI document planning until after the assessment webinars.
  • The meeting was adjourned at 11:15 A.M.


  • New I-Share libraries recently completed SysAdmin training.
  • VuFind ‘Hide e-resources to which I don’t have access” button is live and some Instruction Committee members have incorporated it into the classroom.
  • Debbie reported that the CARLI webmaster and communications director worked up a rough mock-up of the new committee pages.  The name is still to be determined and she will share more information as the demo site is further developed.

Tasks assigned:

  • Molly will contact Devin Savage to find out if he would be willing to present on the “how and what” of library assessment.
  • Susan will contact Lisa Hinchliffe and Jen-chien Yu to confirm their presentations on writing assessments/rubrics and interpretation of the data, respectively.
  • Susan will draft a proposal for the IACRL pre-conference to be sent for editing by committee members via e-mail.  Deadline for submission is 10/20/13.
  • Follow up from 8/23 meeting: Lorna contacted catering and facilities at Joliet Junior College about holding our instruction forum there the week of June 17, 2014.  She will report back upon further contact with these groups.


  • Review of webinar proposals
    • The Request for Presenters received five responses.  Some were deemed more appropriate for our June forum.  
    • Devin Savage, who helped form the Assessment listserv, did not respond and the committee felt it would be worthwhile to contact him personally.
  • IACRL pre-conference
    • The pre-conference will feature one main speaker followed by one hour concurrent breakouts in the morning and two hour concurrent breakouts in the afternoon.
    • The Instruction Committee would like to sponsor a two hour session  because comments from past activities show participants enjoy the opportunity to talk with colleagues.
    • Potential topics were discussed.  Susan and Frances Brady proposed: What are we finding out from evidence based instruction? How do we then review and revise instruction based on assessment outcomes?  The committee agreed this was a good topic to explore further.
