Instruction Committee Meeting- July 29, 2013

Decisions:

  • The co-chairs of the 2013-2014 Instruction Committee are Susan Avery and Elizabeth Nicholson.
  • Minutes will be taken by members in reverse alphabetical order. (see schedule below)
  • Blog postings will be created by members in alphabetical order. (see schedule below)
  • Meetings are scheduled monthly to be held via phone/online. (see schedule below)
  • The Instruction Committee will hold another Instruction Showcase in June 2014, tentatively during the week of the 16th.  There will not be an unconference, but for the fall we will try to plan a webinar since there is less planning lead time required.
  • The meeting was adjourned at 1:22 p.m.

Announcements:

  • Susan Singleton explained the reasons behind the new CARLI committee structure; it was initiated by the I-Share Instruction Team requesting to go beyond the scope of I-Share in committee work.  Other changes:  they will push the committee to get minutes posted quickly using the new minutes template, encourage collaborative programming and other cross-committee collaboration, and have six months lead time for events.  The two CARLI staff liaisons on each committee will help make arrangements for committee work, provide updates from CARLI staff and committees, and help with event planning details.  
  • With the new committee structure, CARLI requires a product that can be shared broadly with the membership (white paper, best practices document, review of innovations in the field, thought piece, etc.) to be submitted by each committee to the CARLI Board by June 2014.
  • There will be a CARLI ebook patron driven acquisition project forthcoming.  This will be a training challenge and Susan foresees that the Instruction Committee could play a role when implementation nears.
  • The Linux migration this summer paves the way for later upgrades to Voyager.  The earliest for any upgrade would be summer 2014.
  • Six new libraries have joined I-Share.  Two are already live and the remaining four will be by January 2014.
  •  Google Hangout is an option for virtual meetings instead of Adobe Connect if there are 10 or fewer connections.  Need to decide whether to set recording on or off.  

Tasks assigned:

  • Elizabeth will create a Google doc for us to work on the Board project.
  • Elizabeth will post the meeting schedule, minutes taker schedule, and blog poster schedule.
  • Lorna will check on sites for the June Instruction Showcase, including Joliet and Kishwaukee.
  • CARLI staff will create one blog account for the Instruction Committee to use.
  • Lorna will ask for some old Instruction Committee content to be moved from the old CARLI web site and wiki to the new CARLI web site.  Afterwards she will ask for the unconference wiki to be deleted.   

Discussions:

  • The Instruction Committee (Lorna) will invite members of the CARLI Assessment Interest Group to our next phone/online meeting to see what they have in mind that aligns with our events for the year, potentially partnering on a webinar in Fall 2013.
  •  We could have a webinar in October and another in February as part of a series.
  • We could pursue a collaboration with Public Services for an event in Fall 2014 if they are open to that possibility.
  • We discussed topics for the Board project - demand driven acquisition ebook ‘how-to’, ebook impacts on teaching patrons and reference services.  We agreed that our focus should be on the user perspective.  We could discuss upcoming trends in library instruction and use the relevant parts of the Horizon Report for our format.
  • Debbie led discussion about the display options for adding an area to the new CARLI web site for the Instruction Committee materials.  Content we anticipate posting includes best practices, past events and webinars, and a link to our tagged blog posts.  Debbie will have the same discussion with the Public Services Committee.  When finalized there will be a section on the main CARLI menu leading to content areas for both committees.
