Susan Singleton Welcome
Susan Singleton welcomed the team and shared information on big picture projects CARLI is now focusing on such as: the eXtensible Catalog (XC), purchase-on-demand print books, and consortially owned e-books. CARLI will continue to manage shared back-end library system functions and is exploring additional front-end discovery options, including the eventual implementation of the XC. Jennifer Bowen from the University of Rochester may be able to provide a webinar to ICAT members of the Metadata Services Toolkit of the XC. At this time, CARLI is monitoring the development of commercially produced webscale discovery systems, but not intending to buy one for the consortium. I-Share will remain at its current size of 76 members, barring any emergencies. A purchase-on-demand print book option will be available to consortial members, with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign serving as the processing agent for acquiring and providing books to library users within a 24-48 hour turnaround time. CARLI plans to issue an RFP for models for purchase-on-demand e-books this fall.
Susan was frustrated by the amount of links in I-Share for electronic resources that are only available to individual schools. She also announced the CARLI board has approved a recommendation to reduce collection duplication by suggesting a five copy maximum. She is interested in having ICAT provide guidance for more standardized cataloging and display of electronic resources in the catalog.
RDA Update
On behalf of IRIS, Emily provided an RDA update as she attended the RDA Update Forum at the ALA annual conference. Implementation of RDA has been postponed until January 2013. The focus over the next several months will be to rewrite the documentation into clear, concise language, beginning with a few chapters and testing the rewording before completing entire document. By September 2011 an outline on how to develop stakeholders’ input should be completed, utilizing listserv and other communication tools. OCLC will start planning work with PCC for RDA, revising texts and providing examples. ALA publishing is making improvements to the RDA toolkit and has extended their special double-user offer for new subscriptions and renewals through August 2012. It was agreed that ICAT and the IRIS subcommittee will not plan any RDA related webinars, etc., until closer to implementation date.
Genre/Form Headings
The team discussed the “LC Genre/Form Headings and What They Mean for I-Share Libraries” document drafted by Kristin. The Cataloger’s toolkit cannot be used to update headings. Casey has tested the Global Data Change in Voyager 8 and it can be used to update the existing headings. Casey will investigate queries to identify genre/form headings that need to be updated, but it will not be a high priority as the wording of headings has not changed. Cheryl will inquire with the cartographic catalogers at her institution to help determine if there are situations where the change to the new lcgft is more complicated than simply flipping the coding. Kristin will contact OCLC for description of how OCLC is handling the systematic clean-up. Kristin will also update the LC Genre/Form Headings document.
Updates to “Suggested Priorities for Bibliographic, Holding, and Item Record Maintenance”
The team discussed the process of updates to “Suggested Priorities for Bibliographic, Holding, and Item Record Maintenance”. It was agreed the process was working and will continue. Casey described the current maintenance projects she recently completed, OC4 & OC14. She would like ICAT to test the SQL and provide feedback by August 2nd. Discussion on how libraries handle maintenance issues ensued. As lack of staff time seemed to be the biggest reason for libraries not doing maintenance, Heather suggested using Graduate School of Library and Information Science students from Dominican University to help with the workload. She will contact the Practicum advisor at Dominican University to obtain information about the practicum program and possible use of GSLIS students with I-Share maintenance projects.
IUG Response to CatER Recommendations
The team discussed the “IUG Responses to the Recommendations of the Cataloging Electronic Resources/Electronic Resources Display in the OPAC Task Force Final Report.” Cathy will confirm the OPAC team is aware that I-Share libraries should continue to have the choice to display or hide content in the 856 field. Casey will make the appropriate changes to existing CARLI documentation to remove references to Xenu, as the link checking software is no longer supported by CARLI. ICAT will continue to provide training opportunities through webinars and workshops that focus on cataloging electronic resources, as well as provide support and training for loading batch records from vendors.
Forums
The team discussed several options for training opportunities and/or forums. It was decided to plan a two to three webinars this Fall with a forum in the Spring. Some webinar topics suggested were:
