Guest: Susan Singleton, CARLI

Announcements:

  • Susan Singleton announced that CARLI will be reviewing and making changes to its committee structure. Goals are to make all groups equal, to maximize the number of libraries which can participate, and to increase collaboration between committees. Changes will take effect in July 2013.
  • Susan Singleton presented several issues which might be addressed by the group in the coming year. These included reviewing the “Access & Analysis” research awards program and standardized report options using Voyager. CARLI will be hosting Archon. She asked if group members (or colleagues of group members) would consider if they are currently using Archon to be on an email list to support colleagues just beginning to use the product.
  • Elizabeth Clarage gave an update on the CARLI print PDA program. After six months, 324 books have been purchased. 66% were purchased within three months of their publication date. 59% were only available in print format. 59 libraries have requested books. Funds were not being spent very quickly, so the program could be expanded possibly by adding a few more years of content retrospectively.

Tasks assigned:

  • Nichole Novak and Elizabeth Clarage will review links on the CARLI Scholarly Communication web site before October.
  • Elizabeth Clarage and Todd Spires will review the documentation for the CARLI Book Digitization Initiative.
  • Elizabeth Clarage will track down the original goals of the special collections/archives survey from a year or two ago. The Collections Working Group may then investigate pursuing a grant to conduct a more exhaustive survey across the state and create a web directory.
  • Kate Harger and Pam Hackbart-Dean will work with volunteers from the E-Resources Working Group to investigate the possible creation by CARLI of a central portal for usage statistics for databases.
  • Elizabeth Clarage will contact Paige Weston about providing libraries the option of having predatory open access journals (Beall’s List) deactivated in SFX.
  • The group will also begin planning for 2012-2013 activities and take into account Susan Singleton’s suggestions.

Decisions:

  • Minutes of the May 3, 2012 meeting were reviewed, and it was noted additional initials were needed for approval.
  • The Collections Working Group selected Kim Fournier as Chair-Elect for 2013-2014.
  • Due dates for Book Digitization Initiative proposals will be November 1, December 15, March 1, and June 1.
  • Dates for review of Book Digitization proposals will be November 27, January 7, March 19, and June 18.
  • The meeting was adjourned at 2:45 p.m.
