Decisions

  • The June 21 minutes were approved.
  • Monthly committee meetings will be held at 9:00-10:30am on the 3rd Wednesday of each month. Next meeting will be September 20 at 9am.

Tasks Assigned

  • Minutes taken by Carl Lehnen.
  • Minutes responsibilities for future meetings will be assigned by last name. Minutes should be prepared within 7 days of the meeting.
  • Elizabeth or Jen will create calendar invites for future meetings.
  • Jen Masciadrelli will create a poll of potential topics for subcommittees to be voted on by members.
  • Members will respond to poll by September 13, one week before the meeting.

Announcements

  • Member Announcements:
    • Carl Lehnen (University of Illinois Chicago): Shifting spending to EBAs and DDAs that used to go to approval plans.
    • Gwen Gregory (Northern Illinois University): Difficulties discarding items withdrawn from the collection, particularly journals and other non-monograph items.
    • Janice Derr (Eastern Illinois University) is also doing a journal weeding project based on duplication with JSTOR.
  • CARLI Announcements:
    • CARLI annual meeting is on November 16 at the I Hotel in Champaign, registration available on the CARLI website. Committees are invited to present.
    • Program planning committee is offering a certification on Open Education Librarianship for up to 5 CARLI members. It is an 8-month online program. There will be an online discussion on September 20.
    • CARLI will continue EBA programs with Wiley and Oxford. For Oxford, will continue access to Biology, History, Law, Music, Political Science, Religion. Psychology, Sociology, and Social Work are being dropped.
    • New I-Share libraries being added to go live in June 2024. Chicago Theological Seminary, City Colleges of Chicago, College of Lake County, Elgin Community College, Prairie State College.
    • CARLI electronic resources staff are working on calendar year 2024 with selection system to go live in October.
    • CARLI is moving forward on a program for last copy serials in association with WEST: Western Regional Storage Trust.

Discussion

  • Elizabeth Clarage reviewed meeting structure and communication channels.
  • Jen Masciadrelli reviewed committee charge and guidelines.
    • Last year the committee had several subcommittees:
    • Archives subcommittee undertook a survey of CARLI members and recommended creation of Archives Taskforce that will start work this year.
    • Open Access Collections subcommittee has representatives from this and other committees to review new open access collections as they become available to decide whether to activate in the I-Share community zone.
    • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion subcommittee held an online discussion about creating diverse collections. Topics which arose related to DEI included: setting aside specific funds, GOBI slip plans, diversity audits, identifying publishers, promotion of materials, and useful resources.
    • Weeding ebooks subcommittee evaluated the Illinois Digital Academic Library (now on Ebsco ebooks). Reviewed 1900 ebooks published before 2000 and 90% of the books were deemed “historical.”
  • The committee discussed several ideas for subcommittees for 2023-24.
    • Archives has been spun off and Weeding Ebooks has completed its work, so will not continue as subcommittees.
    • Alma Analytics. Revisit topic from a few years ago to help people get more benefit from Alma Analytics and Primo Analytics.
    • Promoting ebooks in underutilized collections.
    • Diversity audits. Partnering Gobi to review recent purchases against non-subject parameters to identify new titles for purchase.
