Conference Call/Adobe Connect

Tasks Assigned

  • Connie James-Jenkin took minutes.
  • Deb asked all four groups to report in January what they hope to accomplish by the end of April for inclusion in the committee’s annual report.  
  • Deb asked each group to think about what, if anything, they want to have on the google doc site to share with member libraries in January.  Please report ahead of the January meeting as project publicity will need to be submitted in mid-January.
  • Elizabeth will create a new google doc to organize the FY18 projects.

Decisions

  • The minutes from the previous meeting of November 30, 2017 were tentatively approved, appending final check when available.

Announcements

  • CARLI Update:
    • The CARLI office will be closed from 12/25/17-1/1/18, reopening on 1/2/18. If your library encounters a system emergency during these dates, call the CARLI phone number and someone will get back to you.
    • There will be no deliveries 12/22/17, 12/29/17, or 1/1/18. Please fill out the closing survey with dates your library is closed.
    • The previously announced CARLI office renovations will start in January. Expect no change in service.
    • The RFP for the new library system was posted on 11/16/17, closing in January. Task force members will review the submissions but will be unable to discuss it. There will be no proposed product presentations.
    • Open Textbook workshops will be coming to Governor’s State University on 4/23/18, Loyola University on 4/24/18, and Heartland Community College on 4/26/18. Registration is forthcoming.
    • New I-Share libraries are almost done with test cycles.
    • Jennifer Taylor will be starting at CARLI on 1/2/18 to work with electronic resources.
  • Member Announcements:
    • Oakton Community College has hired a new part-time evening employee. They are currently accepting applications for an Online Access and Instruction librarian job.
    • Illinois Institute of Technology has a new systems librarian and a new scholarly communication librarian. A part-time archivist position is open and accepting applications.
    • Northeastern Illinois University is continuing their search for a Dean.

Discussion

  • Collaborative Collection Development
    • Education Group:
      • Michelle reported on the group’s work. They are working on identifying K-6/8 textbooks by contacting school districts, collecting titles, and checking I-Share to see what may already be available. Many schools are using online resources. These are not being included in the project. Some districts feel that the textbook landscape is changing so rapidly they do not want to share their textbook lists. Some schools are heading down the path of having teachers develop their own “textbooks” for their classes. The project is focusing on school districts near universities with education programs. Kimberly will be reaching out to participants from last year’s efforts to check textbook use, feedback, etc.
    • One Time Purchase Group:
      • Deb reported that work is ongoing on publicity for the January CARLI newsletter.  Deb worked on the google doc site and created a new spreadsheet for FY18 Ebook Group.
      • The group is working on publicity for January.  
    • Open Access Ebook Group:
      • The group discussed Biblioboard (a project from RAILS). We may potentially include it during Phase 2 of the open access e-book project, as it requires more evaluation and curation.
      • There was extensive discussion of how to identify and appropriately word open access e-books in the I-Share catalog.
      • The group worked on editing the survey that we will send to CARLI members on open access e-books. The survey was forwarded to CARLI staff for Survey Monkey and approval for the January newsletter.
  • Miscellaneous
    • The Google Group discussion board will be for internal committee use.
