Tasks Assigned

  • Dan Blewett took minutes.
  • Jen and Elizabeth will work with the CARLI Office on the best way to add MARC records for open access titles to the catalog.

Decisions

  • The minutes from the previous meeting of October 31, 2017 were approved.

Announcements

  • CARLI Update:
    • The CARLI November Newsletter is now available, and has lots of information. There are various educational programs coming up, and Elizabeth is working with two CARL groups that are planning two of them. There will be 3 training workshops for the Online Textbook Network, 2 in the Chicago area.  The Instruction Committee also has an event coming up.  Be sure to check the CARLI calendar for event details and registration.
    • The RFP for a new library system has been published. This was drafted by the I-Share Next Task Force.
    • Millikin University (https://millikin.edu/uc) has finished a new building with the library and learning commons, and the Public Services Committee is planning an Open House on March 15, more information and registration will be forthcoming.
    • The Open Educational Resources Task Force has been hard at work.  They are creating a website, and will be asking for resource link suggestions that they can add to it. They have created a mailing list. In addition, they are hosting a webinar on January 17, 2018.  The records for books from the Open Textbook Network are now available in the I-SHARE catalog.
  • Member Announcements:
    • Oakton has posted for a part-time position in Circulation.

Discussion

  • Deb and Gretchen thanked Elizabeth and Jen for all their work to support of the committee, since they forgot to at their presentation at the CARLI Annual Meeting. There were no questions after the presentation, but several people expressed interest in joining initiatives or the committee.
  • Collaborative Collection Development:
    • Education Group
      • Michelle reported about their work, and noted that more publicity about the program is needed, along with more information-gathering about what materials are needed to support schools. Most of the titles purchased last year were oriented towards what is needed for the Chicago Public Schools, which makes sense when one considers the size of the school system and related demand. But, perhaps the new focus should be acquiring titles to support schools in the rest of the state - although there is certainly some overlap between what is used in Chicago, and what is used elsewhere.  Teachers have indicated that some students/classes at the secondary level are shifting to e-textbooks and resources. So it might be that the focus of the project should be redirected to the K-8 level. The group will aim to have a new book list for the January CARLI newsletter publicity push for all committee projects.
    • Open Access Group
      • Gretchen shared links to their various working documents. Niamh reported that this group was working on the following possible next steps.
      • Perhaps choose a small e-book collection to use from the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB) as a test case, to see how their bibliographic records can be included in the I-SHARE catalog.
      • Recruit volunteers to identify and catalog other e-books not included in (DOAB). These records will need to be peer-reviewed before being added to DOAB.
      • Records for JSTOR open access books do show up in the I-SHARE catalog, but these books are only available at those institutions that have JSTOR.  This confusing situation may need to be somehow addressed.
      • A survey is being developed, asking how libraries handle records for open access books. The survey has to be run past the CARLI Communications office first, and will probably be sent out early next year.
      • There was discussion about the procedures on how CARLI handles these bibliographic records, and how individual libraries might do it.  Standards for cataloging these items need to be established. Also, how might the new I-SHARE NEXT catalog handle these records?
    • E-books Group
      • A publicity update note is being prepared for submission for the January CARLI Newsletter.
      • Elizabeth got a list from ProQuest of items available for consortial purchase at Non-Linear pricing. The list will be further revised to indicate what items are already owned in print by I-SHARE libraries. Then the list will be made available to all members, so that they might consider a one-time purchase for the entire consortium.
    • One Time Purchase Group
      • The group will prepare publicity of the project for the January CARLI newsletter as well, and will also contact last year’s participants and ask them to continue.  Each member library will be asked to consider purchasing two print books.
