CARLI Collection Management Committee Meeting: September 28, 2017

Tasks Assigned

  • Kimberly Shotick took minutes.
  • Deb will submit the one-page summary of FY17 Annual Project for the CARLI Annual Meeting.
  • Kimberly and Michelle will work on the Education collaborative collection development project.
  • Connie and Deb will work on the One Time Purchases collaborative collection development project.
  • Chad, Dan, and Deb will work on the eBook collaborative collection development project.
  • Gretchen and Niamh will work on the Open Access Monographs collaborative collection development project.
  • Subcommittees will meet via phone to work on their areas of collaboration. Elizabeth and Jen can help facilitate the meetings by setting up conference calls if needed.
  • Send comments regarding your subcommittees to Deb for inclusion in the committee’s presentation for the CARLI Annual Meeting.

Decisions

  • August minutes were approved with corrections
  • The meeting schedule for the rest of the year has been set.
  • The committee decided to continue the collaboration projects for education, ebooks, and one time purchases.
  • The ebook collaborative collection development project will use the list of items available that ProQuest created using the committee’s specifications.
  • The committee will also work on a project related to open access monographs.

Announcements

  • CARLI updates:
    • There are 4 new I-Share libraries.
    • CARLI now has a budget.
    • Registration is open for the annual meeting.
    • Strategic planning is ongoing and will be part of the annual meeting.
    • Last copy program: CARLI is asking if there are any institutions that are interested in reviewing non-print last copy items (with the understanding that you would retain the item if you accept).
    • eBooks: ProQuest now allows anonymous on campus access, contact ebook support at ProQuest to set that up. The consortium is having issues with the “Order of use” when there are ebook copies that are owned by both a member and the consortium.
    • Open Educational Resources
    • CARLI has established a 9 person OER Task Force. It will look at creating training for the membership.
    • Open Textbook Network training: During the week of April 23rd, there will be three sessions around the state that will offer OER training for CARLI members.
    • CARLI staff are working to add the MARC records for open textbooks from the Open Textbook Library (https://open.umn.edu/opentextbooks/) into I-Share. Similar to the HathiTrust records, the items will be display in the local catalog but will not live there.
    • The consortial ebooks purchased in the past few months should load this Friday and appear on Saturday.
    • Searching “EBL- PDA” will bring up the consortial ebook records in
    • I-Share along with others that have that note in their MARC records.
    • The e-resources calendar year selection cycle will open in October.
    • Mary Burkee is retiring.
  • Member updates:
    • Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy is doing a water drive. They will be hosting the International Student Science Fair next year.
    • Oakton Community College is going through HLC reaccreditation.
    • UIC set an enrollment record; their freshmen count went up 700. They are building a new dorm.
    • COD has librarians more involved outside of the library participating in committee work and co-teaching.
    • NEIU’s Lisa Wallis is Acting Dean. They met enrollment targets. There is a Presidential search in the fall.
    • IIT has joined CRL. They are looking into using VuFind 3.
    • Loyola also had a record enrollment this year. They have a new Associate Dean.
    • ISU has selected an architecture firm for space planning.

Discussion

  • The Scholarly Communications page changes are completed.
  • The CARLI Annual one page report was reviewed.  
  • Goals for next year were discussed. Decision: Continue the collaborative projects in: Education, eBooks, onetime purchases
    • The eBooks project will use the list of titles available from ProQuest.
    • Michelle and Kimberly will continue the Education project.
    • Connie and Deb will continue the One Time Purchases project.
    • Dan, Deb, and Chad will work on the eBooks project.
    • Niamh and Gretchen will work on the Open Access Monograph (OA) project. Possibilities include:
      • Encouraging catalogers to catalog OA material.
      • Creating best practices in adding OA books to your catalog for the I-Share environment.
      • Collecting and filtering OA items and records.
      • Putting together a collection in OCLC manager so non I-Share libraries could download the records, thus benefitting the whole of CARLI.
      • Creating best practices for weeding and maintaining.
      • Incorporating OCLC’s OA knowledge base list.
      • Long term plan: Reaching out to open access publishers to find a way to get their records into library catalogs.
  • Next steps: The project groups/group leaders will meet. Jen and Elizabeth can set up meetings if needed. Send any comments about your subcommittee for the annual meeting to Deb.
