help!

CARLI governing and associate member libraries have access to the Saskia digital image archive from Scholars Resource. This collection contains 30,000 digital images of paintings, sculpture, and architecture, including images from many important collections: the Prado, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Uffizi, and the Louvre as well as archaeological sites in Greece, Italy, Turkey, and Egypt.

The images are displayed in both high resolution and thumbnail format, so whether teaching staff needs to add images to a PowerPoint presentation or use a high-resolution version to show details of a painting, they have exactly what they need! Additionally, the descriptive data about the images includes references to the occurrences of these images in 19 major art history texts:

  • Architecture, 2nd edition
  • Art: A History of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, 4th ed.
  • Art Across Time, 2nd ed.
  • Art and Ideas, 10th ed.
  • Artforms, 7th ed. revised
  • Art History, rev. 2nd ed
  • Culture and Values, 6th ed.
  • Exploring Art, 1st ed.
  • Gardner's Art Through the Ages, 12th ed.
  • History of Art 6th ed
  • A History of Far Eastern Art 4th ed
  • History of Italian Renaissance Art, 4th ed
  • History of Italian Renaissance Art, 5th ed
  • Living with Art, 6th ed.
  • Medieval Art, 2nd ed.
  • Northern Renaissance Art, 2nd ed.
  • The Story of Art, 16th ed.Understanding Art, 7th ed.
  • The Visual Arts: A History, 6th ed.

The Saskia archive is powered by CARLI’s CONTENTdm-based digital library service. CONTENTdm makes searching for the images easy. Users can access "pre-defined" searches that group images from major textbooks together, or they can use keyword or advanced searching to find the exact images they need. By downloading the CONTENTdm PowerPoint plug-in, you can load images and their descriptions straight into PowerPoint presentations!

If you're interested in promoting the Saskia collection to your campus art community, CARLI has created a press release template that your library can customize and use to disseminate information about Saskia to art faculty, teaching assistants, staff, and students. A copy of this document (in Word format) is available for download under the section "Saskia Art Images Resources." Also available is a Saskia informational sheet that library staff may use to answer some of the common questions about using the collection.

Information about the Saskia collection may be found at http://www.saskia.com/
