New Features now available in the Saskia Art Images Collection

The Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI) is pleased to announce new features are now available in the Saskia Art Images Collection available through CARLI Digital Collections at http://collections.carli.illinois.edu .

New Features

The CONTENTdm PowerPoint plug-in enables quick and easy import of My Favorites, that is, JPEG format images as well as their metadata, into Microsoft PowerPoint. The PowerPoint presentation can then be edited and modified using the tools available in PowerPoint.  For more information on how to install and use the PowerPoint plug-in, see http://collections.carli.illinois.edu/cdm4/ppphelp.php . This feature may be of particular interest to faculty and students of art and art history, and for preparing presentations for their courses.

CARLI libraries now have the ability to display and download the high-resolution TIFF image file directly from a link in the item's metadata.  To display the high-resolution image, click the link in the metadata Full Resolution field of the item to open the file.  To download, right-click the link in the Full Resolution field and choose to "Save As".

Detailed usage and rights information for the Saskia collection can be found on the collection's "home" page at http://collections.carli.illinois.edu/cdm4/index_saskia.php?CISOROOT=/saskia#usage .
A link to this information is now available in every item's metadata Rights field.

If the Saskia Art Images Collection available through CARLI Digital Collections does not meet your institution's needs, a CARLI institution may request its own copy of the Saskia images and metadata to load on your own digital image server.  Please contact CARLI Support at support@carli.illinois.edu for more information and pricing.

Background

CARLI purchased the Saskia digital image archive from Scholar's Resource in 2005. The collection contains 30,000 digital images of paintings, sculpture and architecture, including images from many important collections: the Prado, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Uffizi, and the Louvre as well as archaeological sites in Greece, Italy, Turkey and Egypt. The images can be displayed and downloaded in high-resolution format. Additionally, the descriptive data about the images includes references to the occurrences of these images in 19 major art history texts, including Gardner's Art Through the Ages, 12th edition; Understanding Art, 7th edition; Art and Ideas, 10th edition; Discovering Art History, 4th edition. A complete list of textbooks is available at http://www.scholarsresource.com/Browse/BrowseTextBooks.aspx .

This archive is available to CARLI member libraries at no direct cost to the library.

Information about the Saskia collection may be found at http://www.saskia.com/

The Saskia archive is the first digital resource to be powered by CARLI's CONTENTdm-based digital library service.

Access

CARLI members may access the Saskia images at:
http://collections.carli.illinois.edu/

On-campus access to the Saskia images is now available at most CARLI member institutions.  If you are unable to view full images from on-campus at your institution, please contact support@carli.illinois.edu for assistance.

Off-campus access to the Saskia images requires user authentication to verify CARLI affiliation. Connections that are not authenticated will be limited to viewing the thumbnail images and descriptive data. Off campus access is now available to users of the 65 I-Share libraries. Off-campus access for CARLI libraries beyond the I-Share libraries can be established though the institution's proxy server.  Please contact CARLI Support at support@carli.illinois.edu to determine if off-campus access is possible for your institution.
