Reference Librarian (Part-time) - Benedictine University

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Job Title: Part Time Evening/Weekend Reference Librarian

Department:  Library

Reports to:  Associate University Librarian

Position Summary:  Provide reference assistance to library patrons.  Supervise library staff and facility during assigned Saturday, Sunday, and weekday evening hours. 

Essential Job Responsibilities:     

  • Provide reference assistance to patrons using electronic, print and other library resources.                                                          
  • Working in collaboration with the reference and instruction librarians, develop and maintain subject-specific guides to resources and strategies beneficial to users, i.e. LibGuides, pathfinders, etc.
  • Oversees all library operations when working evening/weekend hours.
  • Performs regular or special library work as assigned, such as compiling usage statistics and reports and maintaining the Library FAQ site.
  • Implements collection development policy related to the collection in specified subject areas. Selects new reference materials in consultation with other librarians.

Other Functions:

  • Prepares the library for opening; oversees required closing procedures and ensures security of building on assigned evenings and weekends 
  • Assists with circulation duties when needed.

Required Qualifications:

Education:  MLS from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent   

Experience:  Library experience preferred.

Specific Skills:  Excellent written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills, reference skills, including reference interview skills, computer skills, problem solving skills.

Specific Knowledge, Licenses, Certifications:  Familiar with MS-Word; proficient in Microsoft Outlook; Internet; various bibliographic databases.

Physical Demands:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.

This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.

Use of computer screen, phone and customer service.

May require bending, or sitting for long periods of time. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Supervisory Responsibility (if applicable):  Supervises student workers on duty.   

Working Conditions:  Usual office environmental conditions; primarily assigned weekday evening and weekend hours
