Health Sciences Librarian - DePaul University

The Health Sciences Librarian works with students, faculty, and staff to build skills and support teaching, learning, and research across DePaul’s expanding range of mission-oriented and strategically targeted health programs, including nursing, public health, health sciences, speech-language pathology, and more. The Health Sciences Librarian is part of a highly collaborative team of Research, Instruction & Academic Engagement librarians, focused on developing and applying their expertise in providing instruction and creating online guides and tutorials to support teaching and learning across health-related and cross-disciplinary subject areas. In addition to their role as educator, the new Health Sciences Librarian will engage in the collaborative processes of building, managing and promoting library collections that meet the needs of DePaul’s diverse health-related academic community. The Health Sciences Librarian will work in a highly supportive, collegial culture that encourages active participation in meaningful and valuable skills training and professional development. This includes training workshops, committee memberships, and engagement in programs that support the Library’s mission and its Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access goals while building connections and partnerships across DePaul’s wider academic and user community.

Responsibilities & Duties

Research Support & Reference Services:

  • Provide high-quality on-demand reference and research support across multiple venues (e.g. in-person, online chat, e-mail), covering a wide range of health-related and multidisciplinary subject areas and programs, encompassing all stages of the research process, and including substantial and ongoing research projects (e.g. systematic reviews).
  • Conduct in-person and online (Zoom, chat, or phone) research consultations with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Provide assistance in the use of bibliographic management tools (e.g. EndNote, Zotero).
  • Perform and assist in the development of advanced search strategies and systematic search methodologies for the discovery of evidence-based literature using databases such as PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and sources of grey literature.
  • Collaborate in the ongoing development and functioning of a reference services environment that successfully engages with its community of users and responds to their diverse and changing information needs.

Teaching and Learning:

  • Develop and deliver in-person and online (Zoom) library instruction sessions, training workshops, orientations, and other events that seek to build library research skills and promote the use of information resources. Integrate information literacy concepts and skills into health-related curricula and co-curricular.
  • Create and develop research guides (“LibGuides”), online tutorials, and other learning objects that support health-related or cross-disciplinary subject areas, courses, and research activities.
  • Contribute to the provision of library instruction services for students in DePaul’s First-Year Writing Program.
  • Collection Development
  • In assigned subject areas, select and request information resources in a variety of formats (e.g. E-book, books, streaming videos) that support the teaching, learning, and research needs of DePaul’s diverse academic community.
  • Manage library collection funds and monitor budgets in assigned subject areas.
  • Respond to faculty, staff, and student requests for additions to the library’s information resource collections.
  • Participate in the process of evaluating and providing feedback on new or proposed additions to the library collection.
  • Monitor and analyze library collection coverage and usage and maintain an optimum and effective provision of resources to support existing and future programs and library users.
  • Identify and promote the use of open resources.

Professional Development & Service Activities:

  • Keep up-to-date on the latest developments and best practices in academic and health sciences librarianship, higher education, and emerging technology (e.g. through discussion lists, professional literature, webinars, workshops, and conferences).
  • Accept opportunities to serve on library committees, task forces, or working groups, including the library’s Instruction Tutorial Working Group.
  • Actively participate in relevant academic libraries and health sciences professional organizations.
  • Participate in library professional development activities and initiatives.

Academic Engagement & Outreach:

  • Actively engage with faculty, students, and staff in assigned liaison areas and seek opportunities to collaborate and build strong working relationships to facilitate the integration of library resources into curricula and research projects across DePaul departments, institutes, and centers.
  • Through interactions with faculty, students, and staff, promote library services and resources, including the Via Sapientiae institutional repository, and foster awareness of relevant trends in scholarly communication and open access.
  • In assigned liaison areas, analyze trends in DePaul research and teaching and maintain awareness of current and future programs; apply this information in response to user needs.  
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

  • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program (or equivalent).
  • 2 years of professional experience providing reference services/research assistance in an academic or health sciences library.
  • Significant knowledge and expertise in the use of health and healthcare information sources.
  • Experience teaching library instruction and information literacy in an academic environment and/or applying an understanding of the concepts and goals of information literacy through other relevant teaching or training experiences.
  • Experience creating instructional and information materials such as interactive or streaming video tutorials, LibGuides, surveys, and/or other learning tools.

Preferred Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in health sciences, biological sciences, or in some other health, clinical, or life sciences-related field.
  • Professional experience as health science or nursing liaison in an academic or health sciences library.Experience performing and assisting in the development of advanced search strategies and systematic search methodologies for the discovery of evidence-based literature using databases such as PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and sources of grey literature.
  • Continuing education in health science librarianship.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to rapidly changing technologies and methods.
  • Experience collaborating with faculty to understand and support their research and information needs.
  • Second master's degree in a health-related or biological sciences-related field

Physical Requirements

  • Visual acuity, hand-eye coordination and motor skills sufficient to use a computer, copy machine and other office equipment are required.
