Director, Medical Library - Southern Illinois University School of Medicine

The Department of Information and Communication Sciences at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine is seeking a versatile and skilled Director to lead the Medical Library. This position provides leadership, planning, and management for the Medical Library and campus-wide Records Management Program.  The Library provides core scholarly, public and institutional information, research and knowledge management support to SIU-SM students, faculty, residents and staff, as well as to area health professionals, library professionals, and consumers in a timely and helpful manner. 

Duties include serving as the administrative head of the Medical Library including overall planning, management and control of internal operations.  This includes the recruitment, selection, training and development of the Library and Records Management Staff.  Responsibilities also include oversight of School of Medicine Library Operations on the Carbondale Campus and serving as liaison to all the libraries in the SIU System.  Responsibilities include maintaining operating and capital budgets within established financial guidelines and monitoring activities and costs on an ongoing basis.  Duties also include representing the School of Medicine in multiple state-wide organizations and serving as liaison to the National Library of Medicine.  

The position reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Education and Curriculum, who reports to the Dean and Provost of the School of Medicine.  Position collaboratively works with Associate Deans/Provosts/Chairs in fulfilling institutional responsibilities and serves and participates proactively with other members of the School’s senior management team in developing and executing strategic plans and in policy and decision making to meet the School’s mission. 

Qualifications for the position include completion of a Masters’ Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited school and five years of professional experience with progressive responsibility in an administrative or supervisory capacity in an academic or health sciences library.  Membership in the MLA Academy of Health Information Professionals is strongly preferred.  Candidates must have an understanding of medical education, research and clinical care and the ability to manage a complex organizational unit and its related budget.  

The SIU Medical Library is located in Springfield, IL with the main SIU campus in Carbondale.
