Clinical Assistant Professor and Digital Scholarship Librarian - University of Illinois at Chicago

The UIC University Library seeks an innovative, strategic, and collaborative Clinical Assistant Professor and Digital Scholarship Librarian.

The Digital Scholarship Librarian plays a critical role in the development and delivery of digital scholarship programs and services to the UIC community. This position will provide instruction, consults, and training to UIC faculty and students in support of digital scholarship and digital humanities research methods. This position reports to Head of Assessment and Scholarly and Communications and will work closely with the Assessment and Scholarly Communications team, liaison librarians, digital programs librarians, and other faculty and staff across the 
libraries.

This clinical track appointment includes the expectation that that faculty member will be actively engaged in and contribute to the profession through scholarship and service related to professional and scholarly interests.  This includes publication, presentation, and committee work at various levels.  Expectations are further outlined in the norms for clinical appointments. About Assessment and Scholarly Communications 

The Assessment and Scholarly Communications Department develops educational and outreach programs to support open access publishing, author's rights, open access compliance, data/text mining and visualization, 3D modeling, digital publishing, digital humanities and digital scholarship. The department manages the institutional repository (Indigo), the campus-wide research information system (MyActivities), the Digital Scholarship hubs, and other digital publishing tools. The department also leads the design and implementation of regular internal and external surveys and other assessment tools

Duties

  • Develop and provide training and workshops to support faculty and students on digital scholarship/digital humanities research methods, tools, and platforms, with a focus on the social sciences and humanities (e.g., data analysis, visualization, GIS, text mining, multimodal publishing, 3D modeling, digital media (podcasting), and/or network analysis).
  • Consult with faculty, students, and other researchers to support their development of digital scholarship projects.
  • Respond to in-person and electronic inquiries from faculty and students related to digital scholarship.
  • Provide guidance and support to digital scholarship student employees on consults, workshops, demos, and instruction as appropriate.
  • Manage the operation of the digital scholarship and fabrication hubs, including supervision of student employees.
  • Collaborate with other units on campus to organize lectures, seminars, and other events on digital scholarship.
  • Support and promote digital scholarship initiatives and collaborate with the Humanities Institute on Digital Humanities programing.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging and evolving technology, methods, and initiatives in digital scholarship to inform decision-making, support services, and further innovation.
  • Provide input on software and services needed to support digital scholarship.
  • Participate in library, university, and professional service activities.

The successful candidate will have some flexibility to focus on skills, tools, and services that are of primary interest to them, in balance with other key responsibilities. 

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program or a non-US equivalent by the start of employment 
  • Experience with common software or programming languages used within at least one area of digital scholarship, such as text and data mining, visualization, GIS, or network analysis
  • Understanding of current trends and methodologies in digital scholarship, digital humanities, and scholarly communications
  • Demonstrated commitment to and support for a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Effective communication and presentation skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Willingness to learn new skills, techniques, and software as needed in the role
  • Knowledge in the use and application of digital scholarship, digital humanities, or data science tools, technologies, and methods
  • Knowledge of research processes and the role of data within contemporary research and scholarship

Salary/Rank/Contract:

Benefits for a twelve month appointment include 24 days vacation; 12 days annual sick leave with additional disability benefits; 11 paid holidays; medical insurance (contribution based on annual salary; coverage for dependents may be purchased); two dental plans available; life insurance paid for by the State; participation in one of the retirement options of the State Universities Retirement System compulsory (8% of salary is withheld and is tax exempt until withdrawal); no Social Security coverage, but Medicare payment is required. This appointment is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois and UIC United Faculty Local 6456, IFT-AFT, AAUP.
