From the American Civil War Collection (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville) in CARLI Digital Collections.

This digital collection contains several documents spanning the entire period of the U.S. Civil War (1861-1865), at present including two military orders, six songsheets printed by Charles Magnus, and eight letters composed by soldiers and civilians detailing battles, conditions, and news from back home. These materials are owned by Dr. Richard L. Millett, Emeritus Professor of History at SIUE, who donated the use of his collection to the Lovejoy Library.

The featured image depicts an envelope addressed to Mrs. Lydia Weaver, Elizabethtown, Lancaster County, Pa., and postmarked Covington, Ind., Mar. 15, 1863. The enclosed letter has been transcribed: Written on March the 8th by Mrs. Weaver’s cousin Mary Carnagey, it describes civilian conditions, beginning with a list of war inflations on goods and sundries. Both stationery items have been lithographed in red and blue ink with patriotic sentiments and emblematic imagery.
