CARLI Digital Collections Featured Image: Grace Episcopal Church New Lenox 1928

From the Adele Fay Williams Collection of Drawings and Prints (Lewis University) in CARLI Digital Collections.

This print of a drawing depicts Grace Episcopal Church in New Lenox, Illinois. The title is inscribed at the bottom of the work, which is also signed by the artist and dated 12-23/28 (i.e., December 23, 1928).

The image comes from a collection of drawings and prints by writer and artist Adele Fay Williams (1859-1937). The collection was donated to the Lewis University Canal and Regional History Collection in 1989.

During her childhood in Joliet, Illinois, Williams was determined to become an artist. Her training began in U.S. art schools such as the Chicago Art Institute, the Pennsylvania Academy of Arts, and the New York Art Students League. She subsequently studied in Paris, including a stint under French Impressionist painter Pissarro. She returned from Europe having mastered the depiction of the street scene. More than 40 drawings and prints in this digital collection attest to her ability to record the everyday architecture and landscape of Joliet and its surrounding area.
