Building Service Assistant - University of Chicago

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Building Services and Operations, this position provides basic preventive and corrective maintenance for the 5 ASR cranes in the Mansueto Library, the associated lifts, and delivery stations. This position also provides maintenance for the Library compact shelving system and assists in activities of the Building Services and Shipping & Receiving departments.

Essential Functions

Responsibilities:

  • Performs and completes maintenance checklists on ASR equipment and spaces in the Mansueto Library.
  • Responds to crane breakdowns/shutdowns and other trouble calls. Troubleshoots problems (possibly at extended heights), and performs mechanical and electrical repairs, such as replacing photo eyes, relays, contactors, switches and retractor chains, gear motors, etc.
  • Performs preventive and corrective maintenance work related to compact shelving, including flooring and rollers.
  • Assists in activities of the Building Services section, assembling and installing furnishings and equipment, making minor repairs, etc.
  • Performs activities related to the Building Services section, including event setups, coffee making, granting contractor access, and loading dock coordination etc.
  • Address other Building Services tasks as needed.
  • Perform some Shipping & Receiving tasks as needed.

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience, or Certifications:

Education:

High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience maintaining equipment or building systems required.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate in writing and in person required.
  • Excellent customer service skills are required.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment required.
  • Demonstrated excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills utilizing appropriate resources to resolve issues required.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team required.

Technical Knowledge or Skills:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Ability to learn a range of position-related software applications required.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office required.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to climb a 50 ft. ladder.
  • Ability to work at heights up to 50ft.
  • Ability to bend, crouch, or stoop.
  • Ability to carry of lift heavy loads (75 lbs.).
  • Ability to stand for 2 hours to 4 hours.
  • Ability to be on-call at times to answer troubleshooting questions.

Pay Range:

$19.17 - $28.06 hourly
