Product or Service Suggestions

What is the proposed product or service?

Type of software/service: Institutional Repository Software

What does it do?

An Institutional Repository System helps a university collect, preserve and provide access to the scholarly/intellectual output of the campus.

What problem does it solve?

Provides a means of capturing the scholarly/intellectual output of the campus. While CONTENTdm is good for the collection and presentation of digital objects, these other products are much more robust when working with text documents (articles, papers, etc).

Is it the only product or service that does this?

There are a few products available, the major ones I know about are: Bepress (hosted solution), DSpace and Fedora (open source, but they require alot of customizing).

Will this require integration with an existing CARLI product or service?

Possibly Voyager and/or CONTENTdm.

What is the advantage of doing this consortially?

We can probably get better pricing if such a product is purchased consortially then individually. Also, this would make it easier for libraries that do not have the resources to implement an Institutional Repository on their own.

CARLI Actions on this Product

The PSVC suggested that educational program be held to better educate member libraries about this option. That session was held in 2008. There was general interest, but not a large demand for CARLI to release an RFP.
