Music Online (includes Smithsonian Global Sound, Classical Music Library, African American Song)

What does it do?

This is a streaming audio database which combines three services offered by Alexander Street Press.

What problem does it solve?

Allows users to hear a wide arrange of music, from the standard classical music repertoire, to world music, and African American music. It also provides teacher resources.

Is it the only product or service that does this?

There are other streaming audio databases, such as Naxos Music Library. However, in the realm of classical music, each performance is unique, so a Beethoven Symphony performed by one orchestra on the Naxos label would be different from listening to the same symphony performed by a different orchestra on the Alexander Street Press product.

Will this require integration with an existing CARLI product or service?

What is the advantage of doing this consortially?

Consortial pricing. As part of a CARLI award proposal, the Music Education Cooperative Collection Partnership has been in contact with Alexander Street Press and confirmed that this company will offer consortial-level pricing for their products. Also, with the establishment of the Music Education Cooperative Collection Partnership in 2006, we have many libraries in Illinois which are interested in subscribing to these products. Referred to Eresources working group for consideration as a purchase. Two other Alexander Strret products were chosen instead.
