Product or Service Suggestions
Date submitted: 2007-03-22 16:59:50 What is the proposed product or service? For CARLI to set up a new committee charged with improving searching for all users. What does it do?Request to start a team with goal to explore and spec (e.g. provide detailed descriptions with testing suggestion and feed back for subsequent iterations) for prototype projects to improve the CARLI end users search experience. This would include (but not be limited to) projects to established improved federated or meta searching, digital collections searching and WebVoyage OPAC as a source of data and possibly as a search interface. I will send a draft of a proposal to explain my idea in more detail. What problem does it solve?Searching is too difficult for many users to consistently find relevant information resources. For example, many staff and patrons are frequently dissatisfied with the OPAC. Equally important, the library resource world is full of separate search mechanisms for formats that make little sense to users. It wastes time and resources to have separate “buckets” for digitized collections, bibliographic data, article citations (multiple platforms), online full text holdings, etc. Current CARLI committees not set up to examine open ended projects of this nature that cross many products and areas of library organization such as public and technical services. Is it the only product or service that does this? Not exactly Will this require integration with an existing CARLI product or service?Yes possilby What is the advantage of doing this consortially?Saving time and resources of members. Potentially putting CARLI in leadership position among its peers. CARLI Actions on this ProductThe request to set up a new committee was declines, but the VuFind interface will include spell checking. |
