What is the proposed product or service?

Become a Portico collaborating network (submitted on behalf of the Statewide Serials Collection Task Force)

What does it do?

Permanent electronic archiving service for online journals (Consortia join as outreach partners to promote the service to member libraries by signing a Letter of Understanding)

What problem does it solve?

Portico provides libraries with the assurance that core electronic scholarly literature will not be lost. CARLI partnership would help libraries find a solution to backfile retention and preservation issues.

Is it the only product or service that does this?

Not exactly; it is slightly different in that it was founded by JSTOR and is part of non-profit Ithaka Harbors Inc. Unlike LOCKSS, it provides archiving centrally.

Will this require integration with an existing CARLI product or service?

Would need integration into documentation and promotional materials, and require some informational programs

What is the advantage of doing this consortially?

Libraries belonging to a consortium that becomes a partner with Portico receive a 5% reduction in their annual archive support payment for Portico. Many state networks have signed on. Places from partner networks joining in 2007 get 10% off for five years. See www.portico.org/consortia.html
