Product or Service Suggestions

Date submitted: 2007-02-07 12:25:13

What is the proposed product or service?

RCL: Resources for College Libraries (Bowker & Choice) 2006 edition

What does it do?

Lists recommended titles for academic libraries in on-line and print versions

What problem does it solve?

Allows library to check whether titles held or considered for adding or withdrawing are recommended for academic libraries

Is it the only product or service that does this?

It's the new edition of Books for College Libraries--collects the information and makes it easily available.

Will this require integration with an existing CARLI product or service?

Could be integrated with I-Share, to find out whether titles are included in RCL.

What is the advantage of doing this consortially?

Get a reduced price for the consortium, check I-Share holdings against this database for collection development and copy retention decisions. It is possible to check titles against RCL through OCLC's Collection Analysis Product, but subscriptions to that are expensive for small libraries.

CARLI Actions on this Product

At the February 2007 meeting of the PSVC, the commiittee refered this suggestion to the E-Resources Working Group. Future suggestions for electronic resources will go directly to the ERWG. The suggestions will only come back to the PSCV if ERWG recommends consideration of central subsidization.
