Product or Service Suggestions

What is the proposed product or service?

RAPID -- a database system devised by Colorado State to facilitate the sharing of journal articles

What does it do?

See https://rapid2.library.colostate.edu/PublicContent/AboutRapid.aspx By providing year-level holdings data in a common database, it allows less-than-24-hour response times to journal article requests

What problem does it solve?

Right now I-Share facilitates the loaning of books, but there is not a product to increase the ease of loaning journal articles between CARLI libraries

Is it the only product or service that does this?

It is the only one I am aware of.

Will this require integration with an existing CARLI product or service?

It seems like it could tie-in to the Voyager holdings instead of being standalone.

What is the advantage of doing this consortially?

If this could facilitate journal article access as much as the call slip system facilitate's book requests, it could save staff time and improve patron services.

CARLI Actions on this Product

At their February 2007 meeting the PSVC directed the CARLI staff to investigate the functionality of RAPID and report back on the pros and cons of using RAPID itself or of creating a similar functionality. Either option hinges on the quality of serials holdings records in I-Share. The staff will also report on the work required by libraries to clean these up. After review this recommendation was rejected based on two factors. 1. the need to maintain a sepate serials holdings database, and 2. the poor quality of many library's detailed holdings records.
