What is the proposed product or service?

ProQuest African Writers Series

What does it do?

ProQuest's edition of the African Writers Series offers a re-keyed and fully searchable collection of works from the highly acclaimed Heinemann print series, which began publication in 1962. Upon completion, it will contain over 300 volumes and thousands of individual literary works. The collection covers the whole historical range of modern African fiction, from early pioneering novels by black African authors such as Sol Plaatje's and Peter Abrahams's Mine Boy to later masterpieces such as Tayeb Salih's Season of Migration to the North, Bessie Head's A Question of Power (1974), and Dambudzo Marechera's The House of Hunger.

Access to out of print literature.

Yes.

Will this require integration with an existing CARLI product or service?

The titles should be cataloged in I-Share

What is the advantage of doing this consortially?

Pricing and opening access to a growing field of scholarly interest.

CARLI Actions on this Product

At the February 2007 meeting of the PSVC, the commiittee refered this suggestion to the E-Resources Working Group. Future suggestions for electronic resources will go directly to the ERWG. The suggestions will only come back to the PSCV if ERWG recommends consideration of central subsidization.
