Product or Service Suggestions

What is the proposed product or service?

ERMS - electronic resource management system

What does it do?

manages electronic journal subscriptions: improves findability for patrons centralize license agreement aggregate usage statistics

What problem does it solve?

Libraries spend a lot of money on electronic resources. They are a huge headache for staff. They are not as visible and accessible to the patron as they could be.

Is it the only product or service that does this?

This would be a bid situation since their is not just one product. Meridian and Verde are two of the big ones.

Will this require integration with an existing CARLI product or service?

Very likely. The ERMS say that they are ILS independent, but I doubt that is entirely true

What is the advantage of doing this consortially?

The biggest advantage is that many of our member libraries do not have the technological expertise of infrastructure to do this, even if they did have the money. The other advantages depend on how we would implement it. Are we going to have opne installation or will we have to run 65-75 instances of it.

CARLI Actions on this Product

The PSVC recognizes the interest in this product area, but also recognizes the confusion that surrounds ERMS functionality. The PSVC recommends that the staff and I-Share Acq/Ser group plan ERMS information sessions that include demos of some of the products. These sessions will help the PSCV guage the breadth of interest in ERMSs. Kris Hammerstrand will take the lead in planning these sessions. July 2008 update - an RFP for an ERMS is expected to be released in August 2008.
