Refworks

What does it do?

It is a web based bibliographic management platform; also creates local desktop databases of references that can be used in scholarly activities. Databases can also be searched from Refworks through z39.50 but results aren\'t as good as if searching in native interfaces.

What problem does it solve?

Helps students learn APA, MLA, Chicago, AMA, and other citation styles; assists faculty, staff, and students with managing bibliographic citations and incorporating them in publications; it helps control costs. All students, faculty, and staff at XYZ university have access to bibliographic management software at less than $1 per person per year. Data is kept on Refworks servers; there is little local administration needed.

Is it the only product or service that does this?

Other products are not network solutions

Will this require integration with an existing CARLI product or service?

Filters are already built for Voyager; and most likely all standard reference databases.

What is the advantage of doing this consortially?

Cost savings and enriching scholarship for Illinois students, faculty, and staff

CARLI Actions on this Product

The PSVC recommended that CARLI begin negotiations to offer RefWorks as a brokered product. The Board approved this recommendation in September 2006. We will also survey the current purchasers in Illinois to see what other campus units they may be partnering with to purchase RefWorks.
