Report to the CARLI Board of Directors
December 5, 2005
Submitted by Linda Morrissett, Chair

A summary of the Collections Working Group’s activities since the November 18th Board meeting follows:

Project COUNTER -

A response to the "Draft Release 1 of the COUNTER Code of Practice for Books and Reference Works"

http://www.projectcounter.org/cop_books_ref.html

was drafted and forwarded to the Chair, CARLI Board of Directors.

Education & Workshops

The CARLI Collections Working Group is planning workshops on the OCLC Collection Analysis Product.  Mary Munroe has agreed to be presenter, providing an overview of the product and possible uses for accreditation and similar collection evaluation reports.  Workshops are scheduled:

1) Chicago:  December 15, 2005, 10:30-12:30, at Columbia College.

2) Downstate area workshop on January 26 from 10:30-12:30.  Location is yet to be determined.  Elizabeth Clarage sent out an announcement on the Collections and Content Listserv seeking a volunteer institution to host the workshop.

LISTSERV

The CARLI Collections & Content Group (CCG@carli.illinois.edu) listserv has been set up.  This listserv replaces the former ILCCM list.

All subscribers to the old ILCCM list should now be subscribers to the CCG listserv.  The purpose of the CARLI Collections and Content listerv is to provide a forum for communication among collection development librarians, subject bibliographers, library administrators and others interested in matters relating to collections, collection development, and collection management within CARLI. This listserv is open to all staff at CARLI institutions.  There is no limit to the number of people that may subscribe to this listserv from any one institution.

Examples of how this list might be used:

Offers of gifts to other institutions
Collaborative collection efforts
Electronic (or digital) collection issues
Preservation issues

CARLI electronic resource offers will be sent as announcements to the CARLI Announce listserv rather than the CARLI Collections and Content listserv.

CARLI Collections Grants Program

The announcement and letter as approved by the CARLI Board of Directors at the November 18th meeting was distributed on the ANNOUNCE listserv.  Discussion of the grants proposal process and opportunities for bibliographer groups to explore potential partnerships will be provided at the Bibliographers' Meeting.

Bibliographers' Meeting

The bibliographers’ meeting will be held either February 3 or February 10 in the Bloomington area.  Details remain pending.

CARLI Digital Collections Collection Development Policy

Potential content and structure of the policy was discussed at length at the Collections Working Group meeting in Chicago, November 10th.  Policies from other cooperative digital collections were reviewed, and it was the consensus that a subcommittee would draft a policy implementing in particular the major points from the Digital Library of Georgia and Columbia University's documents since these two documents seem the most thorough and well structured of those the group had reviewed.  The subcommittee draft is being distributed to the Collections Working Group for revision and discussion at the group's next meeting [conference call, Dec. 13th]
