New Titles List for I-Share Local Catalogs Available
CARLI is pleased to be able to offer I-Share libraries the ability to deploy the Voyager New Titles List in their local catalog.
The "New in I-Share" list was released in the I-Share Universal Catalog (the union catalog component of Voyager) in December 2006. The local new titles list feature will allow I-Share libraries to provide their patrons with an easy way to access materials recently added to their home library collection.
The new titles list allows people to select the "new since" interval (last month, 3 weeks ago, two weeks ago, 1 week ago, yesterday), the sort order (author, title, call number), a library-defined location filter, and to enter any keywords they choose to refine their retrieval. The results that are returned include the author, title (with a hotlink to the full record in your local catalog), call number, and location of the item. For those who use an RSS reader, the results page offers an RSS feed.
The new titles list relies on a report query that is run daily against CARLI's Voyager reports server. This query looks at the create/update date in all holdings records (the MFHD, MARC Format Holdings Data) and selects those items that have had MFHD's added or updated in the last 30 days. The resulting report is queried in turn by the new titles program and returns results based on the user’s criteria.
The new titles list was based on code originally developed by Michael Doran of the University of Texas at Arlington (see http://rocky.uta.edu/doran/autolist/ for more information about Michael's work). CARLI staff have modified Doran’s code to optimize performance in a consortial environment.
The new titles list may be deployed within Voyager's WebVoyáge web catalog or as a separate link on a library webpage (or both). Contact support@carli.illinois.edu to add a new titles list button to the WebVoyáge toolbar of your local catalog. Libraries that have customized their catalog's look and feel can develop their own button and add it to their toolbar. Use this url to provide a direct link to the list from a library web page: http://i-share.carli.illinois.edu/newbooks/newbooks.cgi?library=XXXdb (where XXX is the 3 letter code for the library).
To facilitate customization of the new titles list, CARLI created a Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) editor that allows libraries to define their own look and feel. To access the CSS editor go to http://develop.carli.illinois.edu/ilcso/cgi-bin/newbooks/test_css/edit .
