Library Tools Taskforce Minutes

July 12, 2006 conference call

Present:  Lynn Bierma, Anne Hudson, Terry Huttenlock, Michel Nguessan, Pamela Salela, Peggy Steele, Cason Snow
Not Present:  Pamela Salela

The task force determined that two reports were needed; one to specifically report on the charge of the task force (locally developed and/or enhanced tools), and another to address additional information obtained from the survey results.  Each report will contain recommendations to the CARLI Board, including a recommendation of whether the taskforce should continue and if so, the needs that should be addressed.

The taskforce discussed the need for two definitive directories that need to be created by CARLI:

  1. Director and Department Head contact information for each CARLI member library
  2. Directory of basic tools (software/hardware) being used by CARLI member libraries.

Some discussion was held regarding a recommendation to the CARLI Board of whether a web site should be developed, listing locally developed tools or whether a notification of what is available be made to CARLI members.  If a web site is created, the taskforce will recommend that a CARLI subcommittee be formed to keep it updated by checking periodically that the tools are still valid (being used).

The taskforce members also discussed various software that may be conducive to creating such a web site:  SourceForge.com, or to provide a link from CARLI’s web site: oss4lib.com

During the conference call the taskforce was also reminded that we recommend to CARLI the need for a survey tool that has more flexibility than SurveyMonkey.

The taskforce decided to present the two reports, along with recommendations to the CARLI Board in time for their September 15, 2006 meeting.  By July 31 all taskforce subcommittees will have both reports completed (in draft form), for the taskforce to review.  Review and comments will initially take place via e-mail.

The taskforce will meet again via conference call on August 10th, to discuss any revisions.  Final reports will be due on August 17.

Cason Snow, Peggy Steele and Terry Huttenlock volunteered to on the report on locally developed tools.

Michel Nguessan has volunteered to work on report section regarding the methodology used for the survey.

Lynn Bierma and Anne Hudson have volunteered to work on the general report.  Lynn Bierma has asked Pamela Salela to also work on this report.
