CARLI Welcomes Five New I-Share Libraries

CARLI is pleased to announce that 5 more libraries’ catalogs are now online in I-Share, CARLI’s integrated library system. The five new I-Share participating libraries, their three letter CARLI symbols, and their locations are:

  • Adler School of Professional Psychology (ADL), Chicago
  • Chicago School of Professional Psychology (CSP), Chicago
  • Harrington College of Design (HCD), Chicago
  • Principia College (PRC), Elsah
  • Rush University (RSH), Chicago

This brings the number of Illinois institutions participating in I-Share to 76. Their implementations culminate several months’ work by the staffs of their libraries, CARLI and Ex Libris. The work to enable these libraries for Voyager Universal Borrowing has been completed and the 5 new I-Share libraries are able to place requests for materials held across the consortium and all I-Share libraries may now see these libraries’ collections being selected to fill their UB requests.

The newly rebuilt Universal Catalog (UC) now reflects the holdings of all 76 I-Share libraries. The new version of the UC now includes more than 10 million bibliographic records (10,014,865 at last count). The five new I-Share libraries contributed 261,349 bibliographic records, including 62,006 for which one of these libraries will be the only holding library reflected in the Universal Catalog. They jointly have 11,595 current patrons.

Please join us in welcoming these five libraries to the I-Share resource sharing community!

New CARLI Web Features

CARLI Systems Status Web Page

CARLI is launching a new service to help keep people informed about the status and availability of our various systems (I-Share Voyager, SFX, CONTENTdm) and online services (the CARLI website, the ILDS website, email lists, our support tracking system, etc.) While we will continue to send email announcements in advance of planned outages, we will also be posting status information on a web page on the CARLI website.  The new status page can be found at this url: http://blog.carli.illinois.edu/sys-status/.

We strongly encourage you to share this information with your colleagues, particularly those who may not receive the emails we send to the CARLI “Announce” list. As most of our planned outages are scheduled to occur outside of the 8am-5pm hours, people who work nights and weekends may find the status page particularly helpful.

If you are wondering about the “blog” in the url of the status page, read on.  We are in fact employing blog software to publish the status page but this will not be an interactive blog.  Only CARLI staff will be authorized to post to the blog.  If you have a question or concern related to CARLI systems and services, please continue to send those to us at support@carli.illinois.edu, or phone us at 1-866-904-5843.  If you wish to have an interactive email conversation with other CARLI library colleagues, please join one of our “Interest Group” email lists that are listed at http://www.carli.illinois.edu/email-lists.html.

We hope you find the new service helps you to stay informed.

Improved Navigation

CARLI is pleased to announce a new navigation bar for the CARLI web site with drop-down menus that will provide faster and more direct access to pages within the site. The navigation bar will allow users to navigate to the section overview pages or to select an entry in the drop-down box and proceed directly to those pages, bypassing the overview page.

A few changes to note:

  • Documentation and Training materials are now available from a top level section of the primary navigation bar.
  • The Member Products & Member Services overview sections have been merged into one section.
  • Additional pages and links have been added to ease navigation to CARLI strategic priorities, history and governance, membership, and product information.

Send your questions and comments to support@carli.illinois.edu. Please, let us know if you find any broken links.

Sarah Miller Joins CARLI Staff

We’re happy to welcome Sarah Miller to the CARLI staff. Sarah will serve as a 12-month Visiting Library Systems Coordinator working with SFX support and E-resources Management System selection and implementation. Sarah was previously Visiting Electronic Resources Librarian at Illinois Wesleyan University. She has written about libraries and Facebook and was recently interviewed by the New York Times about Twine social semantic software.

Registration Open: Sept 10 Technical Services Workflow Seminar

Register now for the Technical Services Workflow Analysis Seminar to be held September 10, 2008 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Champaign. This seminar is co-sponsored by the I-Share Acquisitions/Serials Team and the I-Share Cataloging and Authority Control Team.

Libraries face unprecedented demands to adapt to the digital environment. New and emerging tasks related to institutional repositories, non-MARC metadata, networked resources and new generations of users place additional pressure on staffs and workflows built to handle print materials. Yet print-related workloads are not diminishing as fast as digital workloads are growing. Meanwhile, the growth of external competitors such as Google increases the need for libraries to focus on user expectations and highlight their own unique attributes.

How can libraries turn these pressures into opportunities? How can librarians adapt workflows, priorities, and organizational structures to provide those services most important to users? How can library leaders create the capacity to pursue critical new initiatives-without increasing staff? Attend the seminar to hear advice, both strategic and practical, drawn from our experience in workflow analysis and organizational redesign for academic libraries of all sizes and types.

Please visit: http://www.carli.illinois.edu/mem-serv/mem-train/register/080910techserv/ to register and for directions to the event location.  Registration is open to all CARLI libraries (not just I-Share participants), and will be open until September 2, 2008. Registration is limited to 200 attendees. If you have any questions about this program, contact the CARLI Office at support@carli.illinois.edu

CARLI Members Eligible to Participate in New UIUC Monograph Vendor Contract

The University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign will choose a new vendor for all of its domestic monograph orders this year. Anyone in CARLI may elect to participate in the contract, which will be in place by end of June 2009.

The Bidders on the contract (YBP, Coutts, and Blackwell Book Services) are coming to the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign campus forpresentations in September and all CARLI libraries are invited to send staff to hear about the services offered.

Vendors and presentation dates are:

  • Coutts: Tuesday Sept 16, 2:30-5pm, Room 126, Graduate School of Library and Information Science, 501 E. Daniel Street, Champaign, IL 61820
  • Blackwell: Wednesday Sept 17, 9:30-Noon, Room 126, Graduate School of Library and Information Science, 501 E. Daniel Street, Champaign, IL 61820
  • YBP: Friday September 19, 9:30-Noon, Room 66 (basement), Main Library, Sixth and Armory in Champaign

Directions: http://illinois.edu/overview/visitors/directions.html
See also http://www.parking.uiuc.edu/visitorparkinginfo.htm
For parking tips (warning, always difficult when classes are in session so leave time to park and take a shuttle, there are metered spots, .75 per hour so bring quarters!)

Why would CARLI members be interested?
Participants benefit on the contract “piggyback” by not having to go out to bid, in joining to obtain discounts on orders, but even more importantly, in getting easy access to partner libraries’ order information to help guide in member purchase decisions. Other consortia have worked together to “build” their collective monograph collections, including OhioLink, Colorado Alliance, and Orbis Cascade Alliance. This is a University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign contract. In the past many of the state institution libraries have elected to join that campus’ contract and this is the same kind of offer. Each institution makes their decision on whether to join and works out the contract details with the vendor themselves. CARLI is helping in communicating the offer and in facilitating information exchange with any potential CARLI member. Members may elect to participate at any time after the award is made.

UIUC will be choosing the vendor. All are welcome to sit in on the presentations to see what each vendor may offer, each vendor has been asked to explain how partner libraries could work within the interfaces offered, to make the best decisions on monograph orders to fit their needs and their budget.

CARLI Partners with SpringShare to bring LibGuides to Members

Under an agreement with CARLI, SpringShare, LLC will provide its flagship product, LibGuides at a discount to all CARLI members.

This agreement will allow CARLI members to receive a 10% discount on the annual base license fee when they subscribe to LibGuides. In addition, libraries that subscribe before September 30, 2008 will receive an additional one-time introductory discount of 5% off the annual license fee for LibGuides. Pricing is based on the total FTE of the college or university.

For each additional license purchased by a single institution the price for the additional licenses will be $499/year.  A discount is not applied to the custom domain mapping for multiple licenses.

I-Share Updates

VuFind Available to all I-Share Libraries

CARLI is excited to be able to provide VuFind to any I-Share library that would like to consider offering it as an additional interface to their Voyager catalog to supplement ExLibris’ WebVoyage. VuFind is available now at http://vufind.carli.illinois.edu/vf.

The VuFind interface harnesses the power of contemporary Web search technology to give patrons more of the features they are used to seeing on other websites. VuFind is built on a number of leading-edge open source application frameworks, most notably Apache Solr. It was first developed at Villanova University. Several other Voyager customers are actively working with VuFind, including the National Library of Australia, Georgia Tech, and Yale.

VuFind features include:

  • Simple search box that can be dropped into Facebook or course management systems
  • “Did you mean?” spell-checking
  • Search from any screen
  • Fully functional web browser navigation buttons
  • Faceted narrowing of search results (format, language, owning library, subject, etc.)
  • Social networking tools (comments, tags, favorites)
  • Personally selected user name and password
  • Resource sharing through Voyager Universal Borrowing (and support for local collection call slip requests, where allowed)
  • Full access to the Voyager “My Account” service for renewals, request status, etc.
  • Enhanced content through Syndetic Solutions modules (e.g., cover art, reviews) and Google Book Search
  • Target or source for SFX
  • Option to exit VuFind to use the “classic” WebVoyage, if/when desired

The VuFind interface is different from the WebVoyage interface and it is now possible to let your patrons choose which interface they prefer to use. CARLI is able to support institutional branding in VuFind and provide VuFind urls that default to your institution’s collection and branded view.

If you’re interested in implementing VuFind for your library, send an email to support@carli.illinois.edu .

We’re very grateful for the input and testing by CARLI’s 12 early adopter libraries. Working with a team of CARLI staff, they continue to advise us on the VuFind interface. Thanks to everyone involved.

FY 2008 Statistics Reports Package and Consortial Statistics Now Available

The FY 2008 annual statistical reports package has been run for the I-Share libraries. You can download the stats package from your respective xxxftp directories. The date range for circulation stats is 7/1/07-6/30/08 [inclusive]. The collection stats [snapshots] are current as of the date on top of each report. Libraries wanting to download their statistics from their ftp directory should do so by August 29, 2008.

Two new stats have been added to the stats package for FY08:

  1. Circulation Stat 6. Circulation by Patron Group and Item Type‹This report counts the charges done during a specified period, broken down by the patron group and the item type that the item had at the time the charge was done. If your library uses temporary item types for reserves or new books, the use of these materials will show up on this report.
  2. UB Stat 4. UB Requests Placed and Filled [expanded and enhanced version]. The enhanced version of this report now contains 3 sections and provides details by Pickup Location. This will be useful for libraries that have branches.

The I-Share consortial statistics for FY2008 are available on the CARLI Web site at: http://www.carli.illinois.edu/mem-prod/I-Share/i-sysdocs/I-network.html
The consortial stats include:

  • Collection Stat 8: Database Record Count
  • UB Stat 1 - Outgoing ILL [Lending]
  • UB Stat 2 - Incoming ILL [Borrowing]

NOTE: Collection Stat 9: Unique Titles Report will be posted soon. An announcement will be sent to I-Share when the report is available.

Details and descriptions of each report can be found in the "Annual Voyager Statistics Package" document at: http://www.carli.illinois.edu/mem-prod/I-Share/i-sysdocs/I-network/statspck.html

Suggest a Theme for the 2010 Collection Awards

The CARLI Collections Working Group is gearing up for the 2010 Collections Enhancement Awards Program and they’d love your feedback on the theme for the Collection Partnership/Collaborative Digitization portion of the program.

Subject areas suggested by past participants are:

  • Poverty
  • Peace/Justice/Conflict
  • Multiculturalism
  • Innovation

Please complete our brief survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/awardstheme to let us know which of these themes you might be interested in developing into an awards proposal. Feel free to suggest other themes as well.

The Collections Enhancement Awards Program encourages the sharing of collections resources for the institutions of higher education in the state. Awards fall into two categories:

  • Access & Analysis Awards support enhanced bibliographic access to current collections or analysis of current collection strengths & weaknesses. Some examples include creating electronic guides to archival collections; adding holdings information for serials; targeted analyses in designated segments of the state’s current collection; interlibrary loan studies; or reviewing the history and impact of the collection enhancement awards.
  • Collection Partnerships / Collaborative Digitization Awards support collaborative projects among libraries. Collaborative digitization projects are specifically encouraged. In addition to CARLI member libraries, project partners may include non-CARLI organizations or agencies in the state (such as historical societies or museums).
