Results of the 2009 CARLI Board Election
The 2009 CARLI Board of Directors election ended on Friday, May 29. New Board members elected to 3-year terms beginning July 1, 2009 are Mary Case (University of Illinois at Chicago), Cindy Fuller (Millikin University), Donna Smith (Kankakee Community College), and Lisa Stock (College of DuPage). Beginning July 2009, Karen Schmidt (Illinois Wesleyan University) will be Chair of the CARLI Board and Connie Bakker (College of Lake County) will be Vice-Chair.
Outgoing members Carla Tracy (Augustana College), Claire Eike (School of the Art Institute of Chicago), and Ellen Sutton (College of DuPage) participated in their final Board meeting on June 5th. The Board, staff, and membership appreciate and thank them for their time and their commitment to CARLI.
Board Task Forces Appointed
At their June 5th meeting, the Board discussed the CARLI Collections Enhancement Awards Program. Following the extensive discussion, Board members approved a recommendation to form a task force to undertake a full review and analysis of the Collections Enhancement Awards. Read the task force charge and roster on the task force web page. In addition, funding for the FY2010 Collections Enhancement Awards was reduced to $70,000 and a moratorium was instituted on funding for the Collections Enhancement Awards in FY2011. Funding for FY2012 will be determined following the final report from the Collections Enhancement Awards Task Force.
Funding for the separate CARLI/Open Content Alliance Book Digitization Initiative will remain at $100,000 for FY2011. It will also be reviewed by the task force and a recommendation made on funding in FY2012 and beyond.
The Board also convened a task force to implement structural changes to CARLI’s membership categories and governing structure, as recommended by the Executive Committee.
Committee Annual Reports Available
Annual reports from the Collections Working Group, E-Resources Working Group, Preservation Working Group, Public Services Working Group, I-Share Users’ Group, and the Digital Collections Users’ Group are available from the Reports and Meeting Minutes page on the CARLI web site. We extend our thanks to all CARLI committees for their hard work this year.

Digital Collections
Ensuring Enduring Access: A Forum on Digital Preservation
So you’ve digitized materials and posted them online for user access. Now what do you do with all the files you spent so much time creating? How do we make sure these materials will be viable in 5, 10, or 20 years? Join CARLI’s Digital Collections Users’ Group and Preservation Working Group as we begin to scratch the surface of what digital preservation means for libraries.
The forum will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at the I Hotel and Conference Center in Champaign. Presentations include:
- “That Which Survives,” Jerome McDonough, Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
- “Distributed Digital Preservation: The MetaArchive Approach,” Rachel Howard, University of Louisville

Selected Statistics for CARLI Digital Collections
Selected statistics for collections in CARLI Digital Collections are now available.
Statistics have been collected since CARLI Digital Collections went online in April 2006 and are accessible for viewing in HTML or downloading in a TXT file. New monthly files are generated on the first of every month for activity during the previous month. Statistics include total collection home page views, on-campus vs. off-campus collection home page views, Saskia art images collection usage on-campus by institution, items viewed in a single collection, and size of each collection.
E-Resources
Subsidized Access to Mary Ann Liebert Journals to be Discontinued
Following an extensive review of usage, CARLI will discontinue subsidized access to Mary Ann Liebert Journals in December 2009, at the conclusion of the current contract. A Health Sciences task force is reviewing products that may be offered as a replacement. Liebert sales representatives will begin contacting CARLI libraries in July regarding individual licensing of the journals. More detailed information will be sent to the CARLI CCG and E-Resources listservs soon.
I-Share
New CARLI WebVoyage FAQ and Blog Page Available
CARLI has created an FAQ on our web site to share some of the most commonly asked questions and answers about the new look of WebVoyage, the Voyager public interface as supplied by Ex Libris. We anticipate that the FAQ will change over time and you will be able to note changes and additions to the FAQ by the "Last revised" dates that appear with each question.
Additionally, we have opened a new space on the CARLI blog for your comments on, and ideas about WebVoyage displays. The first entry on this topic includes instructions on how to set up a personal login so that you may post comments. The CARLI staff and the I-Share Users' Group's OPAC Team look forward to an open and productive blog conversation about this important matter.
I-Share Upgrade
The most current information about the recent I-Share Voyager upgrade continues to be available on the Voyager Upgrade web page. CARLI systems' availability status and other current known issues are also posted on the System Status page.
As with any software installation of I-Share's magnitude, fine-tuning is necessary. Staff are closely monitoring performance and addressing functional issues as they arise. CARLI staff are also working closely with the I-Share Users' Group OPAC Team to address display issues in WebVoyage and to specify and prioritize CARLI modifications to Ex Libris' default version of the public catalog interface.
Syndetics Indexed Content Enrichment
Later this summer, CARLI will load Syndetics ICE (Indexed Content Enrichment) including searchable tables of contents and annotations/summaries into the I-Share VuFind catalog. CARLI will cover the cost of ICE content for one year and will to monitor use to see how desirable the content is to libraries.
ILDS Adding 3 New Locations
We are pleased to announce that we will be adding 3 new locations to Illinois Library Delivery Service (ILDS) this summer. Morton College (MRT), and Kennedy-King College (KKC) will begin service on July 1. Richard J. Daley (RJD) will begin service on August 1. A revised paper label that includes the 3-letter ILDS code for the new locations is available on the Delivery web site.
Please join us in welcoming these new locations to ILDS!
Preservation
Steal this Preservation Idea: Polyester Dust Jacket or Book Covers
Libraries that routinely retain book jackets for their collections, or that collect books with fancy bindings, can create inexpensive, non-reactive dust jackets and book covers that will protect the original book jackets and bindings from damage over the long term. These covers can also be used to keep books that suffer from "red rot" (i.e. dried, flaking leather) from dirtying other books.
The covers are easy to make, and the supplies needed are relatively inexpensive: rolls of non-reactive polyester (less than $100 to cover several hundred books depending upon their size), a bone folder (less than $10 each), and scissors.
The Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) recommends "Mylar type D, manufactured by Dupont, and Melinex 516, manufactured by ICI, [ . . .] for use on books. Four mil polyester is suitable for most books."
The only other investment required is time. This is an excellent activity for student workers, particularly when they are stressed out during exam periods, and would like repetitive work that doesn’t require much thought.
The NEDCC has issued an illustrated pamphlet with simple-to-follow instructions.
Save the Date! Forum on AudioVisual Preservation
The CARLI Forum on AudioVisual Preservation will be held on October 13, 2009 at Columbia College, Chicago. Featured Speakers include Henrietta Zielinski and Thomas Hodge from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Jimi Jones and Jennifer Hain-Teper from UIUC. Registration and full program information will be available in early fall. Topics will include the basics of preserving motion-picture film, sound, and photographs, A/V preservation on a small budget, and funding opportunities for A/V preservation.
