Digital Collections Updates

Save the Date: Digital Projects Forum

The CARLI Digital Collections Users Group will be hosting a digital projects forum on July 25, 2008, at Chicago State University.

This forum will focus on the planning and creation of digital collections. A tentative list of topics that will be covered include:

  • Planning your digitization project
  • Audio digitization
  • Digital collection success stories at CARLI libraries
  • An introduction to Dublin Core metadata
  • Collaborative digitization projects

Registration for this event will be available soon. Please contact the CARLI Office at support@carli.illinois.edu if you have any questions.

Improved Navigation and Searching in CARLI Digital Collections

The CARLI Digital Collections Users Group (DCUG) is pleased to announce the following improvements to the navigation and searching of CARLI Digital Collections (CDC).

  • Navigation Bar: The navigation bar previously appearing at the top of each page in CARLI Digital Collections has been relocated to the area directly below the banner in order to integrate it into the page.  This navigation bar contains links to home, collection home, browse, advanced search, preferences, favorites, about, and help.
  • Search All Collections Simple Search Box: The button for the simple text search box that appears in the upper right corner of each page in CARLI Digital Collections is now labeled "search all collections" so that users are aware that a search performed there will not be limited to the current collection.
  • Advanced Search: Once a user has entered an individual collection within the CARLI Digital Collections site, the advance search page now defaults to performing advanced searches within that specific collection only. To search all collections, a user need only use the "search all collections" simple search box in the upper right hand corner of the page, or return to the CDC main "home" page to conduct an advanced search across multiple collections.
  • New Collection Home Page Features: CARLI staff will be adding a search box labeled "Search this collection" and a link to "Browse this collection" to the top of the content on each collection's home page to help users move from the home page into the collection.  These new features will be implemented over the next few weeks.

If you have any questions about these new features please contact support@carli.illinois.edu.

New Metadata Requirements for CARLI Digital Collections

The CARLI Board recently approved several changes to metadata requirements for CARLI Digital Collections and endorsed a document on metadata best practices entitled "Guidelines for the Creation of Digital Collection: Best Practices for Descriptive Metadata", created by the CARLI Digital Collections Users Group’s Standard Subcommittee.

While the "Best Practices for Descriptive Metadata" are intended to be used as a guideline for institutions creating collections in CARLI Digital Collections (via CONTENTdm), it contains important information on new required fields and several notable changes to the metadata format that are now required before a collection will be published. These changes are also reflected in updated versions of all other CARLI CONTENTdm documentation.

All documentation, including "Guidelines for the Creation of Digital Collection: Best Practices for Descriptive Metadata" can be found on the CONTENTdm System Documentation page.

SFX A-Z List

According to CARLI records, more than half of the libraries with an SFX instance on the CARLI server now take advantage of the A-Z list of available journal titles that SFX creates for them. These electronic lists, linked from library web pages, connect users to electronic (and for some libraries also print) journals to which they have access. Both the look and the content of the lists can be easily customized via web-based SFX administration. The lists are updated each night, as necessary. Users still have access to the A-Z lists while the nightly updates are in process.  Search functions include:

  • An optional AutoComplete feature that presents possible matches as users enter terms/characters into the search box
  • Related title cross references to "continues" and "continued by" titles
  • Sophisticated CJK and diacritics support
  • Forward and backward browsing
  • Filtering by provider or subject classification
  • Search prompts in any language, easily profiled
