ILDS Gets Off to a Fast Start

The new Illinois Library Delivery Service (ILDS) is off to a fast start, shipping over 130,000 items in over 43,000 bags in the first month of operation. The response to the new direct, 24-hour delivery times has been overwhelmingly positive from both library staff and patrons. We send our thanks to staff at all locations for their outstanding cooperation, patience, hard work and support in the launch of the new system on January 2.

CARLI will hold follow-up webcasts on February 19 and February 22 to review workflow and general ILDS topics.  Attendance at these sessions is optional. Visit the ILDS web site or subscribe to the ILDS listserv for the most current information.

Send us your feedback! We’d love to hear your stories about how this new service is working for your patrons and staff. Email support@carli.illinois.edu.

I-Share Welcomes 5 New Members

I-Share will expand from its current 71 to 76 library catalogs when 5 more libraries go online in July 2008. The libraries are Adler School of Professional Psychology, Chicago School of Professional Psychology, Harrington College of Design, Principia College, and Rush University.

With the addition of the new members in July 2008, I-Share will include the libraries of each state-supported university, over 40 private colleges and universities, 16 community colleges, the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, the Illinois State Library, and the Newberry Library.

The I-Share database currently contains over nine million unique bibliographic records and more than 32 million item records, representing the holdings of the 71 CARLI I-Share member institutions. The combination of this enormous consortial collection with I-Share’s resource sharing services means that I-Share library patrons have ready access to a collection that is larger than most of the world’s greatest research libraries.

AAAS Journal Science to Remain in JSTOR

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) recently announced it has reversed its earlier decision to pull the journal Science from JSTOR electronic journal archives.

In September 2007, the CARLI Board of Directors approved a resolution to the AAAS objecting to the removal of the journal Science from JSTOR. The successful resolution, initiated by GWLA (the Greater Western Library Alliance) and CARLI and supported by the International Coalition of Library Consortia (ICOLC) urged AAAS to reconsider their decision.

CARLI is pleased that AAAS responded to the concerns of the library community and was willing to reconsider and revise their public decision to discontinue their participation in JSTOR. At the January meeting, the CARLI Board of Directors commended Board member David Carlson, Southern Illinois University Carbondale (which is a member of both GWLA and CARLI) for initiating the resolution to AAAS.

E-Resources Working Group Updates

E-Resources Licensing Principles and Standard Agreement Language Available
The E-Resources Working Group has released the CARLI E-Resources Licensing Principles and Standard E-Resources Agreement Language. The Licensing Principles outline the philosophical assumptions of the CARLI E-Resources program, and the principles that guide CARLI licensing efforts. The Standard E-Resources Agreement Language is the document currently used by CARLI in our consortial licenses and can be used by libraries when negotiating for e-resources beyond those provided through CARLI.

It is hoped that the documents will be useful to CARLI member libraries, the vendor community and the larger library community. The documents were approved by the CARLI Board of Directors at their January meeting, and are now available as pdf files from the CARLI web site.

E-Resource Licensing Training

The E-Resources Working Group is planning training for CARLI member libraries on e-resource licensing. A survey will be announced shortly to gather input from the members on areas they would like to see addressed in the training curriculum. The training will be held later in 2008.

Spring Database Subscription Period March 24-April 30

The CARLI Spring Database Subscription Period has been set pending the receipt of all final pricing information from vendors. The database subscription period will be open March 24 through April 30. CARLI staff will post a detailed announcement and instructions to the Collections & Content Group (CCG) listserv when the password-protected CARLI selection database is available.

As in Fall 2007, only CARLI Governing, Associate and Basic member institutions will be eligible to participate in the database brokering program. Institutions that joined CARLI as Basic members will be assessed a handling fee of $50 for each database selected.

For additional information, or to find out how to become an eligible CARLI member contact support@carli.illinois.edu with the subject line: 2008 Spring Database Brokering.

I-Share Updates

I-Share Voyager Software Upgraded

I-Share Voyager Software system was successfully upgraded to version 6.5.3 during the evening of January 8-9. Following the upgrade, CARLI staff regenerated the indexes in every I-Share database in order to assure full distribution of the new features and bug fixes in Voyager 6.5.3.

New Secure Connections to WebVoyage

As part of our continuing effort to protect patrons' confidentiality, all catalog sessions were switched to a secured (https) connection on February 4, 2008. All data transmitted in WebVoyage sessions are now encrypted , so that personal data (names and borrower IDs), which users enter when they place requests or renew their items online, will be even better protected.

Depending on the browsers they use and their browsers' preference settings, users may notice several new behaviors in the OPAC.

The new preferred address for the catalog is https://i-share.carli.illinois.edu. Connections from http://i-share.carli.illinois.edu (without the s) and from http://library.ilcso.illinois.edu (also without the s) are currently being automatically redirected to the new address. Libraries are  encouraged to use the preferred catalog address, as we cannot guarantee that all old urls will thoroughly and consistently support access to all current I-Share services.

CARLI staff are aware that the retrieval and display of Syndetics data (cover images, etc.) is resulting in warning messages in some cases since this change was made. We are investigating options to address this issue that we hope to be able to announce soon.

If you notice any problems with I-Share behavior as a result of this change, please contact support@carli.illinois.edu.

Register Now for “State of Confusion: Writing Your Digital Imaging Grant”

Feeling blue because you just can't seem to get a grant project funded? Get out of your library, shake off those winter "blahs" and attend the CARLI grant writing workshop - this is your opportunity to get advice that could make your next grant proposal a winner!

The CARLI Digital Collections Users' Group is pleased to announce this workshop on writing digital imaging grants. The trainer for the workshop is Alyce Scott, Digital Imaging Program Coordinator at the Illinois State Library.

The workshop will be held twice, on March 5 in Bloomington, and on March 13 in Chicago. The information covered in each workshop will be the same. Visit the workshop web page for more information or to register for this event.

Register Now for “Special Collections on a Shoestring”

Many librarians and staff have small special collections in their libraries with little to no training on their care. With limited budgets and staff, and for fear of doing the wrong thing, many are inclined to do nothing for the care and development of these collections, which can lead to preservation and access challenges.

The CARLI Preservation Working Group is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the workshop “Special Collections on a Shoestring.” This workshop will give guidance on both curatorial and preservation matters for special collections.  Special collections and rare book curators, archivists, and librarians responsible for the care of small special collections are encouraged to attend.

This free workshop for staff at CARLI member institutions will be offered twice. It will be held at Northern Illinois University on March 11 (registration open until March 3) and at Illinois Wesleyan University on March 19 (registration open until March 10).

Visit the workshop web page for more information or to register for this event.

Join CARLI at the IACRL Pre-Conference: Leading While Libraries are Changing: Conversations about the Future of Academic Libraries

Designed for academic librarians and academic library administrators, this day-long IACRL Pre-Conference will initiate conversations and collective thinking about librarian leadership within the context of a changing environment.

Keynote speaker Scott Bennett, Yale University Emeritus Librarian, will frame the day’s conversations with a discussion of the library landscape and the dynamics of change, focusing on how these changes affect space-planning, services, collections and behind-the-scenes operations. A follow-up panel session will feature five Illinois library leaders discussing their visions and plans for the future. Afternoon sessions will consist of two one-hour blocks of roundtable discussions that permit participants to discuss changes in specific aspects of professional practice (e.g. reference, instruction, technical services, technology, administration, consortia, etc.). A final debriefing in the afternoon will bring together all of the ideas and plans developed, and to initiate next steps.

This program is free to individuals from a CARLI member library and $50 for individuals from non-CARLI members. Organized by CARLI’s Public Services Working Group and sponsored by CARLI, the pre-conference will take place on March 26 at the same venue as the IACRL Conference, the Chateau, Bloomington. Visit the pre-conference web page for more information or to register.

LOEX Conference

The Illinois LOEX Committee invites you to the 36th Annual LOEX Conference, May 1-3, 2008 at the Doubletree Chicago-Oakbrook Hotel, Oak Brook, Illinois.

This year's theme explores the instruction librarian's multiple roles in planning, building, and renewing instruction and information literacy programs. Instruction librarians are designers in the process of continuously drafting structural programs for information literacy.

CARLI is pleased to sponsor plenary speaker Laurel Ofstein, Assistant Director of The Center for Creativity and Innovation at DePaul. Laurel will address the theme of "Creative Collaboration: Setting the Course for the Future of Library Instruction."

LOEX is a non-profit educational clearinghouse for library instruction and information literacy information. Information is available at the LOEX 2008 web site.

New Email Discussion List for Small Libraries

Traveling and meetings take money and time, both in critically short supply for small libraries. CARLI has established an email distribution list called smallerlibs-ig@carli.illinois.edu.

If you work in what you consider a small library, or if you are merely interested in the issues of small academic libraries in Illinois, we invite you to subscribe to the list so that you may converse with others with similar concerns and interests.
