Save the Date! Public Services Working Group Regional Open Houses

When the spring semester comes to an end, do you find you're in the mood to get out, to see new sights, to explore a different terrain? The CARLI Public Services Working Group (PSWG) invites you to come along for the ride as we visit five CARLI libraries on three different days:

  • Heartland Community College and Illinois State University (Normal) on Friday, May 22nd
  • John Wood Community College and Quincy University (Quincy) on Friday, May 29th; and
  • Northwestern University (Evanston) on Wednesday, June 24th.

These visits will go well beyond simple tours of the host libraries. They are designed to encourage dialogue about public services practices, problems, and ideas. You'll have ample opportunities to network with your peers, to learn about the host libraries' public services practices, and to share experiences from your home library. Refreshments will be provided. Mark your calendar now for the date you wish to attend—registration and further details are coming soon!

If you have any questions regarding these events please email support@carli.illinois.edu.

E-Resources

Management Tools for CARLI Licensed E-Products

In the months ahead many of you will be facing difficult budgetary decisions. In order to give you access to the management information needed to make these decisions, the CARLI E-Resources staff has begun a series of brief informational email messages about the administrative tools available in the electronic resources licensed through CARLI. The first topic, the EBSCO Administrative Module, is available on the CARLI web site.

If you have topics that you’d like to see covered in future updates, please send your ideas to support@carli.illinois.edu.

ICOLC and ARL Statements on the Economic Crisis, Libraries and Publishers

CARLI has joined with 100 other members of the International Coalition of Library Consortia (ICOLC) to adopt the Statement on the Global Economic Crisis and Its Impact on Consortial Licenses. The statement is intended to help publishers and other providers who license electronic information resources understand how the current financial crisis affects the worldwide information community.  ICOLC forecasts significant, widespread and prolonged cuts in library and consortial budgets that will be slow to climb back to pre-crisis levels.

The statement suggests a range of approaches that ICOLC members believe are in the mutual best interest of consortia and the providers of information services, and calls for consortia and publishers to work together to seek creative content solutions and flexible pricing, payment, and license options.

Following up on the ICOLC statement, the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has released a statement aimed at scholarly publishers and vendors on the current global economic crisis and its effect on publishing and library subscriptions. The ARL statement reinforces some of the key points of the ICOLC statement, while going further to address the specific situations and concerns of the ARL member libraries.

The full statements are available on the organization’s web sites:

I-Share

Server Address Change for I-Share Libraries' xxxftp Directories

Each I-Share library has an account with access to the library's xxxftp directory (where xxx is the library's three-letter I-Share code). The current server name for connecting to this directory, reports.carli.illinois.edu, is changing to files.carli.illinois.edu. Please update your secure FTP client software to use this new server address. The username and password to login remain unchanged.

The current server address and the new server address will both be functional during a transitional period. At a future date yet to be determined in 2009, the reports.carli.illinois.edu server address will no longer connect to the server. CARLI strongly recommends that you make the address change in your PC’s secure FTP software to files.carli.illinois.edu now.

For more information about connecting to your library's xxxftp directory and what it is used for, please see: http://www.carli.illinois.edu/mem-prod/I-Share/secure/execute/SSHSecureShell.pdf .

IMPORTANT NOTE: This change does NOT affect Oracle/ODBC connections for running MSAccess Reports or Strawn Utilities. Do NOT make any changes to the server addresses used in those programs.

If you have any questions, please contact the CARLI Office at support@carli.illinois.edu.

New I-Share "Welcome" Page

CARLI and the I-Share OPAC Team are pleased to introduce a new look for the I-Share Welcome page. The redesigned page makes it easier for users to choose between the classic WebVoyage search interface and the newer VuFind search interface.

Many users will never actually see this welcome page, since they connect to their library's OPAC directly, with a URL that bypasses the welcome page, but we hope that users who do land on the welcome page will find the new design helpful. For an overview of the differences between VuFind and WebVoyage on the CARLI web site.

If you have comments or questions, please send them to support@carli.illinois.edu.

VuFind Changes Introduced

CARLI staff recently introduced a number of important changes to VuFind, the alternative public interface to I-Share/Voyager. CARLI is waiting to receive the next major release of VuFind, so major development work is still on hold, but in the meantime the following changes have been made:

  • The bibliographic data searchable in VuFind are now current as of 9 p.m. yesterday, rather than 3 a.m. yesterday. We anticipate that this will continue to be true from now on.
  • "Unstemmed" search results (that is, matches that are closer to exactly what the user entered) have been "boosted," so that they now float to the top of result lists on author, title, and "all fields" searches. For instance, if the user searches for the author "Tompkin," works by Jessie Tompkin will now display higher in the list than works by Gail Tompkins, whose works are also retrieved because of VuFind's automatic "stemming" of all search inputs. The number of records retrieved by the user's search has not changed; just the default sort order of the search results has changed.
  • The date sort function will now sort search results in reverse chronological order as expected: records now sort on the basis of the data in the fixed DATE1 field rather than the data in the 260$c.
  • Bibliographic records with the obsolete rectype "b" are now correctly identified as "archives." See, for instance, http://vufind-beta.carli.illinois.edu/vf-whe/Search/Home?start_over=1&lookfor=robert+l+darcy+papers&type=all&submit=Find.

CARLI staff welcome your comments and suggestions about VuFind as well as your questions. Please send them to support@carli.illinois.edu.

Adding an OPAC Search Box to Your Library's Web Site

CARLI and the I-Share OPAC Team are pleased to announce a new service available for any library interested in adding an OPAC search box to its library web site. The OPAC Search Box Builder will allow libraries to design the OPAC search box they want to incorporate into their web site, and will present them with copy-and-pasteable HTML to do so.

Please send questions or comments to support@carli.illinois.edu.

Voyager Upgrade Planned for June 2009

CARLI is tentatively planning to upgrade I-Share from Voyager 6.5.3 to Voyager 7 on June 15-17, 2009. Among other changes, the upgrade is expected to include a utility critical to implementing the Universal Borrowing policy changes being recommended for I-Share resource sharing code revision work.

Specific details are not yet available at this early date, but please mark your calendar, particularly if you're the library’s I-Share liaison, and/or the person who installs the Voyager clients. If development and testing continue on schedule, we expect to implement Voyager version 7.1, but we may implement version 7.0 if there are delays in the release of 7.1. During the testing, we will attempt to streamline the upgrade so that it can be completed quickly and we will strive to keep most public service features of Voyager available throughout the upgrade, as much as possible.

More detailed information on the upgrade will be available later this spring. For a preview of the differences in functionality between the current version of Voyager CARLI is running (6.5.3) and version 7.1, refer to the Ex Libris web site where you will find a variety of resources. Contact support@carli.illinois.edu if you need log in instructions for the Ex Libris website.

Historical Browse Counts in I-Share

CARLI is pleased to announce a new method for gathering statistics on browses, that is, in-house use of library materials. When library staff discharge materials used in the library before returning them to the shelf, Voyager counts this as a browse, but it does not record the date of the browse, which makes it hard to account for these statistics for annual reports or other uses. CARLI is getting around this by sampling the browse counts every three months and making the data available for processing with Access queries.

Statistics are available by item location, item type, call number, and (for serials only) title. If you are interested in these statistics, verify that your library staff are consistently discharging materials that are used in house, or set a date to begin to do so, so that useful counts will begin to accumulate.  More information is available on the CARLI web site.

Preservation Tip:  Mold!  How to Identify Mold on Library Materials (Part 1)

Many libraries are concerned about mold on library materials, and rightly so. Not only can mold cause significant health risks such as allergic reactions and other respiratory problems, but it can severely damage many library materials, including paper, leather, parchment and vellum, cloth, and even most audiovisual materials. Here are a few tips on how to identify if you have mold. Our tip for next month will be how to maintain an environment that won’t encourage mold to grow.

Identifying Mold
Mold has two states and can be found on library materials in either of them.

  • Active mold is mold that is currently growing. It appears three-dimensional and either fuzzy or sometimes slimy. If you touch active mold, it will feel slightly moist and will smear easily. Active mold means that the mold colonies are producing spores (mold’s version of seeds) and is probably spreading to other materials. If active mold is found, the materials should be isolated and moved to a less conducive environment if it’s only on a few items; or, if many items are affected, immediate steps to correct the environment should be taken.
  • Inactive mold is mold that was active at one time, but is now in a less suitable environment and has effectively gone into hibernation. Inactive mold may still appear three-dimensional, but will not be wet in appearance or in feel. Inactive mold may also appear much less fuzzy than active mold, depending on the length of time since it was last active. Inactive mold is not producing spores, but in most cases will have spores associated with it that can still be spread and germinated.

If you find inactive mold, or if you have forced active mold into an inactive state, it may be removed from a small number of items using appropriate tools and training. Contact a local preservation or conservation professional for guidance. For large outbreaks of active or inactive mold, professional recovery firms such as Munters, Balfour, or BMS Catastrophe should be called to assess the situation and provide assistance, or materials should be discarded.

Please note: Even once mold has been removed, it will frequently leave permanent stains on porous materials, such as paper and cloth.  Do not expect a treated item to look as if it was never damaged by mold.
