Center for Research Libraries (CRL) Membership Subsidy
At its September meeting, the CARLI Board approved a partial subsidy for CARLI libraries interested in becoming members of CRL. CARLI will subsidize 50% of the annual membership fee up to a maximum of $2,000/year for a total of 2 years. The cost of CRL membership is based on the library’s annual materials expenditure.
What is CRL?
The Center for Research Libraries (CRL) is a consortium of 240-plus university, college, and independent research libraries that acquires and preserves newspapers, journals, documents, archives, and other traditional and digital resources from a global network of sources and makes them available to both member institutions and non-members through interlibrary loan and electronic delivery.
Through CRL member libraries have access to more than 4.5 million publications, archives, and collections and one million digital resources to supplement their own humanities, science, and social science holdings. Users affiliated with member libraries can obtain CRL materials for extended loan periods (automatic 90-day loan with unlimited 90-day renewals) and at no cost.
If you’re interested in receiving a quote on the cost of membership, e-mail support@carli.illinois.edu. For more information, visit the CRL website.
Do You Need a Customized Voyager Query?
Did you know CARLI will write a routine customized query for you at no cost? Your I-Share liaison can request a routine work request by filing a Work Request Online (WRO).
To complete your WRO, you’ll need to provide the following information so that we know exactly what you want: What records should be included in the reports? What fields do you need? Is there a date range that you need? How should the results be sorted? In addition to requesting a customized query, you may also select from one of over 30 types of work requests available online.
Your I-Share liaison will be able to track the track the library's pending work requests, and when notified that the work request has been completed, see that the work is tested and/or verified. For more information visit the WRO web page or email support@carli.illinois.edu.

Digital Collections Highlights
Save the Date: Digitization Grant-Writing Workshops
Back by popular demand!!! Mark your calendars!
The CARLI Digital Collection Users Group (DCUG) is pleased to announce they are hosting two more sessions of the “State of Confusion: Writing Your Digital Imaging Grant” workshops. The original workshops were held last year to help participants lean how to write digital imaging grant proposals that will get their projects noticed. They were so popular that we’re bringing them back for another year!
Once again, the workshops will be taught by Alyce Scott, Digital Imaging Program Coordinator at the Illinois State Library.
Two identical workshops will be offered: one at the Illinois State Library on February 24, 2009 (with a “snow date” of February 26, 2009), and one at the Illini Center in Chicago on March 10, 2009 (with a “snow date” of March 17, 2009).
Registration for the workshops will be required, and more information and a registration form will be available in the coming months. If you have any questions, please contact the CARLI Office at support@carli.illinois.edu.
Digital Collections Featured Image and Digitization Quick Tips
The CARLI Digital Collections Featured Image is a regular addition to the CARLI blog and the CARLIdc-ig e-mail list that highlights images from the collections in CARLI Digital Collections. Details about each image and information about its parent collection is presented along with the image itself. Ellen Corrigan of the Digital Collections Users' Group compiles the Featured Image.
Digitization Quick Tips, another regular addition to the blog and CARLIdc-ig list provides tips, news, and suggestions on various digitization topics. Some tips are CONTENTdm-related, but many try to provide information on the entire digitization process. This feature is brought to you by the CARLI staff.
We encourage you to promote your digital collections via the CARLIdc-ig e-mail list! Feel free to share the successes of your own collections, as well as ask questions or provide your own tips and advice.
If you have any questions about these features, about CARLI Digital Collections, or about CONTENTdm, please contact support@carli.illinois.edu.

Preservation News
Help Us Plan for the Future
The Preservation Working Group is looking towards the future and would like your help. In 2009-2010, the group is planning a program on the preservation of audio-visual materials. Also, the group is always seeking ideas for preservation-related programming. Please complete a brief (5 question) survey for the group.
Preservation Tip: Axis of Evil: Adhesive Tape and Post-it Notes
Imagine, if you will, this scenario: you’ve cut yourself on the arm and in hope of healing it, there’s a big bandage with adhesive tape covering the wound. After a day or so you try to remove it – YOW, it takes some hair and skin with it!! This is the same thing that happens to paper when you remove tape and/or Post-it notes. Not only can these materials “skin” the paper (especially older papers), they leave behind adhesives that are often difficult, sometimes impossible, to remove.
Adhesive tape is basically paper or fabric tape with an applied adhesive layer. Pressure sensitive (sticky) tapes should not be used on materials destined for long-term preservation. Adhesives on tape contain chemicals that work their way into the paper and stain it. With age the adhesives will dry and come loose, crack, or crumble – leaving behind a yellow or brown stain.
These evil entities are known by many names: cellophane tape, double stick tape, “quick-release” tape, brown paper tape, masking tape, drafting tape, self-stick tape, and even archival tape. Don’t be fooled, they should not be anywhere near your valuable materials.
Treat torn pages with a gentle, yet strong, repair by using Japanese paper and methylcellulose (or wheat starch) paste. Not only is this repair pH neutral, it can be easily removed with water - if necessary – leaving no unsightly, sticky residue.
Post-it notes have been with us since 1980 and, although they are tremendously useful, they also should never be used on materials destined for long-term preservation. Clay coated papers are particularly vulnerable to the adhesive transfer problem caused by Post-it notes, leaving a slight adhesive residue when removed. This residue is barely detectable to the touch but very visible if it becomes dirty. Post-it note removal also tends to “skin”, or remove paper fibers, from many papers – in particular softer finish, higher wood-pulp content papers.
Avoid the problems caused by Post-it notes by always using acid-free paper for place markers or for label tags that are inserted into books.
I-Share Updates
I-Share Best Practices for Monograph ILL
The members of the I-Share Resource Sharing Team have noticed a sharp increase in OCLC book requests from I-Share libraries this semester. We’re asking for your help in reminding your patrons that direct requesting via I-Share is the most efficient method for borrowing monograph titles.
For more information, the I-Share Best Practices: Monograph ILL Options for I-SHARE Members at: http://www.carli.illinois.edu/mem-prod/I-Share/circ/bp-monographILL.html provides recommendations intended to provide guidance in formulating your local ILL practices.
New Barcode Format Page
CARLI staff have redesigned the I-Share Barcode Format document. The web page now draws data dynamically from the CARLI membership database and includes links back to individual members' information pages. The new page has replaced the old document at: http://www.carli.illinois.edu/mem-prod/I-Share/circ/barcode-formats.html
The page is easier to read and allows users to search for a specific barcode prefix (item or patron), by using your browser’s Find functionality (usually control+F).
New Titles List for I-Share
CARLI is pleased to announce that the New Titles List for I-Share as a whole is once again updating nightly, and that the "New in I-Share" button has been restored to the classic (WebVoyage) catalog for I-Share, to lead users to it.
The direct link for the New Titles List for I-Share as a whole is https://i-share.carli.illinois.edu/newbooks/newbooks.cgi?library=UCdb .
New Titles Lists for individual I-Share libraries are available at https://i-share.carli.illinois.edu/newbooks/newbooks.cgi?library=XXXdb, where XXX is the capitalized three-letter Voyager code for the I-Share library. To customize the look of the New Titles List, libraries may complete the form at http://develop.carli.illinois.edu/ilcso/cgi-bin/newbooks/test_css/edit.
To add a button to your library's local instance of WebVoyage that will lead users from the OPAC to the New Titles List, I-Share library liaisons may send a note to support@carli.illinois.edu . (VuFind development work is frozen until release 1.0 is available so links from VuFind to the New Titles List will not be added at this time but may be added in the future when development resumes.)
If you have questions, please send them to support@carli.illinois.edu.
New Deleted Record Count Files Available Now
The documentation describing this enhancement to the “deleted records” files has been updated on the CARLI website at: http://www.carli.illinois.edu/mem-prod/I-Share/secure/cat/recdelete.html.
This new file with deleted record counts will be created for the first time for November 2008 activity, and will be made available to I-Share libraries on December 1st. As with all files in the xxxftp accounts on the reports server, these files are automatically deleted from the server after 60 days, and they cannot be re-created. Please download them within 60 days, if you think they might be useful to your library.
If you have questions, please send them to support@carli.illinois.edu.
Mark Your Calendars for January Resource Sharing Webinars
The I-Share Resource Sharing Team will hold two webinars on “Library Services for Distance Ed Students” on January 15, 2009. There will be two sessions covering the same content; one in the morning 10:45-12:15 and one in the afternoon 2:00-3:00.
The agenda is still being finalized, but we wanted to get this date announced now, so that you can mark your calendars in advance. Watch the I-Share listserv for the opening of registration and more details.
Mark Your Calendars for Spring 2009 ICAT Forum
The I-Share Cataloging and Authority Control Team (ICAT) will hold their next Forum on April 30, 2009 at University of Illinois at Springfield.
The agenda is still being finalized, but we wanted to get this date announced now, so that you can mark your calendars in advance. Watch the I-Share listserv for more details.
Voyager Upgrade Planned for June 2009
CARLI is tentatively planning to upgrade I-Share from Voyager 6.5.3 to Voyager 7 on June 15-17, 2009. Specific details are not yet available at this early date, but please mark your calendar, particularly if you’re the library’s I-Share liaison, and/or the person who installs the Voyager clients. If development and testing continue on schedule, we expect to implement Voyager version 7.1, but we may implement version 7.0 if there are delays in the release of 7.1. During the testing, we will attempt to streamline the upgrade so that it can be completed quickly and we will strive to keep most public service features of Voyager available throughout the upgrade, as much as possible.
More detailed information on the upgrade will be available in Spring 2009. For a preview of the differences in functionality between the current version of Voyager CARLI is running (6.5.3) and version 7.1, refer to the Ex Libris web site where you will find a variety of resources: https://support.endinfosys.com/cust/voy/doc/release_notes/release-notes.html. Contact support@carli.illinois.edu if you need log in instructions for the ExLibris website.
ILDS 4th Quarter Closure Dates
The remaining 4th quarter non-service holidays are Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Due to the vast majority of sites who reported that they will be closed on December 24 and December 26, these dates have been added to the list of ILDS non-service days for 2008.
If you need to add any closure dates for your location through the end of this year other than those you reported on the closure survey, or if you did not respond to the survey and will be closed other than the designated non-service dates, please send any dates your library will be closed to support@carli.illinois.edu as soon as possible.
Annual Meeting Follow-up
Thanks to all who attended the CARLI Annual Meeting at the I-Hotel on October 24th. PowerPoint slides from the day’s program are available at http://www.carli.illinois.edu/mem-serv/mem-train/081024annual.html.
