Board Recommends Bylaws Changes

At its September 25, 2009 meeting, the CARLI Board of Directors considered and unanimously recommended adoption of a series of changes to the Bylaws of the consortium. Read the summary of the proposed changes.

The recommendations include the reduction in the number of membership categories from three to two and a change in the way that the seats on the Board are distributed and selected. The Board of Directors believes that these changes represent the logical evolution of CARLI's structure and governance necessary for the continued development of the consortium.

CARLI Governing Directors began voting on the proposed Bylaws changes on Monday, November 16. Balloting will conclude at 5pm on Friday, December 18. An affirmative vote of two-thirds of Governing members is required to adopt these recommended changes. Please contact support@carli.illinois.edu for more information.

CARLI/OCA Book Digitization Initiative and Information Workshop

CARLI is pleased to announce the continuing partnership with the Open Content Alliance for the FY2010-2011 CARLI/OCA Book Digitization Initiative and Information Workshop, a digitization opportunity for Illinois academic and research libraries.

The process has been streamlined for FY2010-2011. Applications are encouraged at any time and project proposals will be reviewed throughout the year. In addition, participants will no longer be required to submit an "Intent to Apply" form. Proposals that meet the theme of "Illinois Culture and Heritage" will receive priority.

For detailed information about the Initiative and the process for submitting proposals, join us for a webinar December 1, 10 a.m.-noon. Register by November 30. Participants may also request an individual session by emailing support@carli.illinois.edu. Additional webinars will be offered throughout the year.

Complete information about the program can be found on the CARLI website,

CARLI Purchase on Demand Pilot Project to Begin February 2010

CARLI will provide matching funds for a pilot project titled, "Building on Our Shared I-Share Success: Extending User Requesting to Support New User Initiated Book Purchases." The project funding is being shared equally by CARLI and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library. Working with YBP, records will be added to I-Share and users will be able to request these print books. Items will be identifiable in I-Share as they will have the location, "Acquired Upon Request Only--CARLI Pilot Program." Once requested, the book may be acquired, rush cataloged, and supplied to the patron who initiated the request. Books will be purchased on demand and filled for any CARLI institutions at no cost to the patron or to their home institution. This consortial project will begin in February 2010. CARLI will be sharing more information about this project in the next few months.

Save the Date! Forum on Collection Assessment--March 5, 2010

Collection Assessment is the topic of the Collections Working Group spring forum to be held March 5, 2010 at Illinois Institute of Technology. The forum will also include an update on the I-Share Analysis funded by a CARLI Collections Enhancement Award. Registration will be available in early 2010.

Upgrade to CONTENTdm Version 5 to Begin December 16

In addition to the CONTENTdm upgrade, a newly designed portal interface for the front page of CARLI Digital Collections will be released when the upgrade process is completed on Jan. 4, 2010.

During the upgrade, a read-only copy of CARLI Digital Collections, current as of 5pm on Dec. 15, will be available for users to view and search at the regular URL: http://collections.carli.illinois.edu.  During the upgrade, it will not be possible to add new digital items or edit existing items in CONTENTdm Web Administration, no new collections will be created, collections previously unpublished cannot be newly published, and no edits to collection home pages will be made.

Save the Date: Webinar Training for CONTENTdm Upgrade

Preservation Tip: Rainy Day Bags

Water damage is one of the major issues that we face in library preservation. Patrons do not always check the weather before checking out books. They also do not make sure that they have enough backpack space for library materials that they check out. One of the easiest ways of preserving your materials as well as providing preservation education to patrons is through rain bags, or what many libraries call "rainy day bags."

Rainy day bags can be a variety of shapes and colors and should be sturdy and secure. Most bags are plastic and are water resistant so that the water does not absorb into the bag causing water damage from within or dye transfer. Bags can be designed with the institution's name, logo, or with tips for preserving library materials. Also, think environmentally when developing your library’s rainy day bags; many companies now offer biodegradable bag options.

If your particular library has funding issues and cannot afford to have special rainy day bags made, ask the library staff if they have any leftover plastic bags from the grocery store that they would like to donate to the cause. Many institutions also have found funding to purchase rainy day bags through official "Friends of the Library" programs. Any sponsorship should be added to the bags as a way of saying thanks.

When it is raining or if the forecast calls for rain, offer any patron checking out library materials a rainy day bag. Most patrons will not ask for bags unless they know that they are available. Rainy day bags are a great way of promoting preservation and protecting your collections.
