Center for Research Libraries (CRL) Membership Subsidies

At its September meeting, the CARLI Board approved a partial subsidy for CARLI libraries interested in becoming members of the Center for Research Libraries. CARLI will subsidize 50% of the annual membership fee up to a maximum of $2,000/year for a total of 2 years. More information about this program will be available at the Governing Directors Breakfast at the CARLI Annual Meeting on October 24. The meeting will include a brief presentation by Melissa Trevett from the Center for Research Libraries.

E-Resources Update

Registration Now Open for E-Resource Licensing Workshop

Registration for the CARLI E-Resource Licensing Workshop is now available. The workshop will take place on Monday, November 17 from 8:30–3:30 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Champaign.  Trisha Davis, Associate Professor and Head of the Serials, Electronic Resources and Rights Management Department at the Ohio State University will cover topics including Licensing Language, Managing Licenses, Interlibrary Loan/ Fair Use/ Course Packs/ Reserves, and Usage Terms.

The workshop is brought to you by the Electronic Resources Working Group and generously funded by the CARLI Program Planning Committee. Attendance is limited to 100 participants. To give all CARLI members an opportunity to attend this session, registrations will be limited to one staff member from each library. If slots are available after October 24th, libraries will have an opportunity to register additional attendees. The registration deadline is November 5.

Fall Database Subscription Period Opening Soon

The CARLI Fall Database Subscription Period will open later this week. CARLI staff will post a detailed announcement and instructions to the Collections & Content Group (CCG) listserv when the password-protected CARLI selection database is available.

As in Spring 2008, only CARLI Governing, Associate and Basic member institutions will be eligible to participate in the database brokering program. Institutions that joined CARLI as Basic members will be assessed a handling fee of $50 for each database selected.

Digital Collections Highlights

The CARLI Digital Collections Users’ Group would like to announce two new features you will begin to see on the CARLI blog  and on the CARLIdc-ig e-mail list:

The CARLI Digital Collections Featured Image: This regular addition to the CARLI blog and the CARLIdc-ig e-mail list will highlight images from the collections in CARLI Digital Collections.  Details about each image and information about its parent collection will be presented along with the image itself.  Ellen Corrigan of the Digital Collections Users’ Group compiles the Featured Image.

Digitization Quick Tips:
Our other regular addition to the CARLI blog and CARLIdc-ig list will provide quick tips, news, and suggestions on various digitization topics.  Some tips will be CONTENTdm-related, but many will try to provide information on the entire digitization process.  This feature will be brought to you by the CARLI Staff.

We also encourage you to promote your digital collections via the CARLIdc-ig e-mail list!  Feel free to share the successes of your own collections, as well as ask questions or provide your own tips and advice.

If you have any questions about these new features or about CARLI Digital Collections or CONTENTdm, please contact CARLI at support@carli.illinois.edu.

ILDS Update

Incoming Delivery Manifests

Lanter Delivery is now providing a daily incoming manifest for most (and soon all) ILDS sites. Lanter is scanning the barcode that appears on the labels that all sites use to ship items to produce a manifest that the driver will leave with each daily incoming shipment. The incoming manifest contains information on each bag that is delivered, including the bag number, scan date, and the name of the sending library.

3rd Quarter Delivery Statistics

We're pleased to report that 374,473 items were shipped via ILDS for the third quarter (July - September) of this year. Even with the summer break, we experienced a 12.5% increase in volume over the second quarter (April - June). This brings our year-to-date total of items shipped to 1,066,208.

4th Quarter Closure Dates

The designated 4th quarter non-service holidays are Thanksgiving (November 27), Christmas Day and New Year's Day. If you need to add any closure dates for your location through the end of this year other than those you reported on the closure survey, or if you did not respond to the survey and will be closed other than the designated non-service dates, please send any dates your library will be closed to support@carli.illinois.edu as soon as possible.

Call for New ILDS Sites

CARLI libraries may now request additional locations for direct ILDS delivery service beginning January 1, 2009. Institutions that are interested in adding one or more of their locations for ILDS delivery should fill out the form and return it to CARLI via fax or mail no later than December 1, 2008. The cost for each added stop is currently $3,250 per year. Stops added on January 1, 2009 will be billed for six months service for the period January 1 – June 30, 2009.

I-Share Update

I-Share Users' Group

The I-Share Users' Group is currently reviewing their charge and how the teams should be structured to carry out that charge. They expect to have recommendations ready for discussion at the CARLI Board meeting in December.

"Text me this call number" from I-Share

CARLI and the I-Share Users' Group's OPAC Team are pleased to announce a new feature in the WebVoyage ("classic") OPAC for I-Share, the Voyager Universal Catalog: from the single-record View pages, users may click a "text me this call number" link to have the first few characters of the title, the full call number, location, and owning institution sent to their cell phones for their personal use. Many users will find this more convenient than writing down a call number before they head to the stacks.

To add this feature to your local WebVoyage instance, the I-Share library liaison may send a request to support@carli.illinois.edu.

Note that selected cell phone service providers are presented in the dropdown list on the form the user completes in order to send the text. If a particular cell phone provider is prevalent among your users but not represented in the list, please contact CARLI so that we can see about adding it.

VuFind 1.0

VuFind is now available as an alternative interface to WebVoyage. VuFind offers patrons a simplified, single search box alternative interface to the I-Share catalog, providing what end users may find to be a better way to search and discover library resources. Over 40 libraries have asked for customizations of the VuFind interface, which indicates that they are using it to some degree.

Villanova University will release VuFind 1.0 later this fall. In anticipation of this version, all further development of CARLI’s version will focus on merging I-Share VuFind with the new release. This will allow us to take advantage of many improvements made by other VuFind collaborators.  Until that work is done, CARLI staff will fix bugs that are discovered and reported, but will not develop additional functionality.

VuFind FAQ Posted

CARLI has posted a Frequently Asked Questions page about VuFind. If you have questions not addressed in the FAQ, please send them to support@carli.illinois.edu.

eXtensible Catalog, WorldCat Local

In addition to VuFind, CARLI continues work on several fronts with new discovery tools. As a partner in the University of Rochester eXtensible Catalog research, we are currently testing an OAI harvester for MARC records. CARLI is also supporting the work of five member libraries’ testing of OCLC’s WorldCat Local, which was released in late September.

Reports Server Synchronization

For several months we have been testing software that would allow us to provide a more up-to-date reports server for I-Share and would also provide a more up-to-date disaster recovery server.  Initial testing was successful, but in testing on the full load of the large I-Share database it proved unstable. We have begun work testing another Oracle product called DataGuard, to see if it offers the necessary functionality and sufficient capacity for a database as large as I-Share.

Preservation News

The CARLI Preservation Working Group, chaired by Lynne Thomas, the Head of the Rare Books and Special Collections at Northern Illinois University, will be contributing a series of articles on preservation issues for the CARLI newsletter this year.

The Group “provide[s] guidance on both curatorial and preservation matters for collections.” In addition to providing preservation-related programming for CARLI libraries, the group has created a Preservation Resources Webliography, to help CARLI Libraries answer questions and learn more about different aspects of Preservation.  After evaluating hundreds of preservation websites, the Webliography brings you the best of the bunch in one place, organized by topic. It includes sections on a dozen different preservation topics, from disaster recovery and mold to digital preservation, and includes how-to guides, blogs, glossaries, vendors, training resources, and grant opportunities.

In the coming year, group members will be writing about the evils of tape and mold, preservation tips for interlibrary loan, looking at some preservation related blogs, and providing ideas for achievable preservation projects, in a series called “Steal this Idea.” Keep an eye on the CARLI calendar; our committee is planning workshops next spring with the Fire Services Institute on recovery after books are burnt.  Looking to the future, the group is planning programs for 2009-2010 on preservation of audio-visual materials. The group is always seeking ideas for preservation-related programming. If you have suggestions or comments, please feel free to email Lynne lmthomas@niu.edu, or complete a brief (5 question) survey.

Collections Update

Book Digitization Initiative Scanning Location Announced

Materials accepted into CARLI’s Book Digitization Initiative will be digitized at the Open Content Alliance facility at the Allen County Public Library in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.  Allen County has a very large genealogy and local history collection and currently hosts 10 scanning workstations.  CARLI will be paying the shipping and insurance costs for sending materials to Ft. Wayne for all participants.

Themes Announced for FY2010 Book Digitization and the FY2010 Collections Awards Program

The Collections Working Group has announced the topic for this year’s programs. The theme for the Book Digitization Initiative for FY2010 will remain Illinois Culture & Heritage, while the theme for the Collaborative Digitization and Collection Partnerships will be Peace / Justice / Conflict. The Proposals Workshops for the FY2010 program will be held December 12-17. Registration is available from the CARLI web calendar.

Last Copy Pilot

CARLI is working with several large research libraries in the state including the University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Northwestern University, and the Newberry Library to develop a pilot project for last copy retention within the state. Additional information will be available later this year, as the details are finalized.

E-Book Symposium Coming Spring 2009

The CARLI Collections Working Group and the E-Resources Working Group will be hosting an E-Book symposium in Champaign on February 23, 2009. Watch for more information in December. Registration will open in January.
