Apply Now for the ARL/ACRL Institute on Scholarly Communication

The first regional ARL/ACRL Institute on Scholarly Communication will be held December 5-7, 2007 in Chicago, Illinois. The deadline for applications is Friday, September 14, 2007. Acceptance to the Scholarly Communication program is competitive and limited to 100 individuals.

The Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI) will host the institute that offers tools and techniques to build a scholarly communication program or move an existing one to the next level. Participants will assess their campus environment before the institute and engage in 2.5 intensive days of active learning. During the institute, participants will develop customized program plan components to implement at their home institutions.

The institute sponsors are seeking participation from a wide range of academic libraries, from community colleges to research institutions. All institutions are invited to apply. Institutions from Illinois will receive preferred consideration.  Institutions are encouraged to propose teams that reflect various institutional perspectives, such as librarians, library administrators, faculty, and campus administrators.

Get complete details about the program and apply online. For questions about the institute and/or the application process, please contact Elizabeth Clarage, CARLI.

Informational Webinars on Electronic Resource Management Systems

CARLI library staff are invited to informational webinars on Electronic Resource Management Systems, also known as ERMS. ERM vendors, Ex Libris and Serials Solutions will be offering CARLI libraries online web demonstrations of their products over the next 2 weeks.  Attendance for the webinars is free, but we are taking registration on the CARLI website to get some idea of the number of participants to expect.

A. Serials Solutions: Wed. Aug. 8 at 3pm CDT

B. Serials Solutions: Thurs. Aug. 9 at 10am CDT

C. Ex Libris: Mon. Aug. 13 at 10 am CDT

These sessions are intended to help CARLI members learn more about ERM products so that we can all be more informed about what these systems could offer libraries and consortia. CARLI does not currently offer a consortially supported ERM or consortial ERM pricing, and the CARLI Board has made no decision as to if and when the consortium might do so.

Find out more about how to participate in these webinars,  access background information on ERMS, or register online.

Register Now for SFX "Refresher" Training Sessions

CARLI will be holding an SFX refresher training session August 22, 2007.  If you are interested in this training, please see the information listed below.  There are also still spots open in our “new implementers” training session, which will be held on August 21.  This session can now also accommodate those seeking refresher training.

Intended audience: Staff from CARLI libraries that already have an SFX instance on the CARLI server, who assumed responsibility for SFX after their colleagues were trained, or who attended training previously but were unable to apply the training soon enough and so now need a refresher class in order to "go live" with SFX.

Session description: These are each one-day training session that will cover the same material that was covered in your institution's initial hands-on implementation training. If there are SFX targets that did not get activated during your initial training day and that remain to be activated, please bring that information with you to class.

Registration: Required.  A maximum of two individuals per institution may attend.  If you are unsure whether you should attend this training, or if you have any questions about this training, please contact the CARLI office at: support@carli.illinois.edu.  Registration is available on a first-come, first-served basis. CARLI reserves the right to cancel this class if it is under-enrolled.

New Vice-Chair Selected by the CARLI Board

Mary Case, University of Illinois at Chicago, was chosen to serve as Vice Chair-Chair Elect by the CARLI Board of Directors at their meeting on July 20. She will serve as the Board Chair beginning July 1, 2008. Mary is currently the University Librarian at UIC.

2007-20008 CARLI Committee Rosters

New members have been appointed to the CARLI committees, working groups and users groups and the new rosters are posted to the CARLI Board and Committees page on the CARLI website. Participating in these groups offers CARLI member library staff a unique opportunity to influence the future of the consortium and its services and we’re thankful to all who volunteered to serve.

The names of all those who volunteered but who were not appointed at this time will be retained in CARLI's volunteer database, for possible consideration as other positions become available throughout the year. Please visit the volunteer page if you would like to add your name to the volunteer database or to add information about your interests and qualifications.

I-Share Updates

Voyager Client Time-Out Change Installed

On August 1, the CARLI technical support staff installed a change to Voyager to reduce the number of time-outs that have been occurring in Voyager for the past several months. The change was made on the Voyager servers run by CARLI; library staff don’t need to make any changes in their Voyager client settings to take advantage of this change. The change automatically went into effect when your client programs were reconnected to the Voyager server following the installation.

If you've been experiencing time out problems, please let us know if this change has resolved your problems, or at least minimized them. As always, please send your questions and comments to support@carli.illinois.edu, and report any critical system problems to us at our 24x7 toll-free number of 866-904-5843.

Voyager Universal Catalog Rebuild Completed

CARLI staff have completed the "rebuild" of the Voyager Universal Catalog (UC) to include the holdings of the six new I-Share libraries. The rebuilt database is now available for searching by users and library staff. Holdings from the new libraries are now displayed in the UC and are available for requesting through Universal Borrowing. The new libraries are: Carl Sandburg College, Illinois Eastern Community Colleges, Knox College, Monmouth College, Saint Francis Medical Center College of Nursing, and Trinity International University.

The rebuilt I-Share catalog replaces the frozen catalog that has been available since the rebuild began. If you have questions about the rebuilt Universal Catalog, please contact support@carli.illinois.edu.

The Universal Catalog, with holdings from 71 I-Share libraries, contains over 32 million items, and 9 million unique bibliographic records.

FY 2007 Annual Statistical Reports Package Available

The FY 2007 annual statistical reports package is now available for all I-Share libraries. You can download the stats package from your respective xxxftp directories. The date range for circulation stats is 7/1/06-7/1/07. The collection stats are current as of the date shown on the top of the report.

Consult the Annual Voyager Statistics Package for details and descriptions of each report.

I-Share consortial stats are also being compiled and will soon be posted to the web site. Watch for an announcement when they become available.

Local Catalogs Hit 25 Million Bib Records

Oakton Community College loaded a record to their catalog on July 27 that brought the combined total of bibliographic records  in the 71 I-Share libraries' catalogs to 25 million. The title is: Integrating environmental print across the curriculum, preK-3: making literacy instruction meaningful, Lynn Kirkland, Jerry Aldridge, Patricia Kuby. Thousand Oaks, CA : Corwin Press, c2007.

The 25 million figure counts all bibliographic records across all 71 databases, and as many libraries hold a number of the same titles, this counts many titles more than once. The I-Share Universal Catalog de-duplicates these records and currently includes over 9 million titles.

Saskia Digital Images for Art Education

Do you have faculty that uses art images for teaching?  Are you looking for ways to help them integrate digital images into their courses?  CARLI can help!

CARLI governing and associate member libraries have access to the Saskia digital image archive from Scholars Resource. This collection contains 30,000 digital images of paintings, sculpture, and architecture, including images from many important collections: the Prado, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Uffizi, and the Louvre as well as archaeological sites in Greece, Italy, Turkey, and Egypt.

The images are displayed in both high resolution and thumbnail format, so whether teaching staff needs to add images to a PowerPoint presentation or use a high-resolution version to show details of a painting, they have exactly what they need!  Additionally, the descriptive data about the images includes references to the occurrences of these images in 19 major art history texts:

  • Architecture, 2nd edition
  • Art: A History of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, 4th ed.
  • Art Across Time, 2nd ed.
  • Art and Ideas, 10th ed.
  • Artforms, 7th ed. revised
  • Art History, rev. 2nd ed.
  • Culture and Values, 6th ed.
  • Exploring Art, 1st ed.
  • Gardner's Art Through the Ages, 12th ed.
  • History of Art 6th ed.
  • A History of Far Eastern Art 4th ed.
  • History of Italian Renaissance Art, 4th ed.
  • History of Italian Renaissance Art, 5th ed.
  • Living with Art, 6th ed.
  • Medieval Art, 2nd ed.
  • Northern Renaissance Art, 2nd ed.
  • The Story of Art, 16th ed.
  • Understanding Art, 7th ed.
  • The Visual Arts: A History, 6th ed.

The Saskia archive is powered by CARLI’s CONTENTdm-based digital library service.  CONTENTdm makes searching for the images easy.  Users can access “pre-defined” searches that group images from major textbooks together, or they can use keyword or advanced searching to find the exact images they need.  By downloading the CONTENTdm PowerPoint plug-in, you can load images and their descriptions straight into PowerPoint presentations!

If you are interested in promoting the Saskia collection to your campus art community, CARLI has created a template that you may use.  This template is a press release that your library can customize and use to disseminate information about Saskia to art faculty, teaching assistants, staff, and students.  A copy of this document (in Word format) is available for download from the CARLI web site. Please look for it under the section “Saskia Art Images Resources.” Also available is a Saskia informational sheet on  that library staff may use to answer some of the common questions about using the collection.

Information about the Saskia collection may be found at http://www.saskia.com/

For more information about CARLI’s Saskia archive contact support@carli.illinois.edu.
