CARLI Welcomes Six New I-Share Libraries

CARLI is pleased to announce that 6 more libraries’ catalogs are now online in I-Share, CARLI’s integrated library system. This brings the number of Illinois institutions participating in I-Share to 71. The new libraries now have their local catalogs online and are eligible to use the I-Share Universal Borrowing resource sharing service to place requests. Later this month the six libraries’ holdings will be incorporated into the I-Share Universal Catalog, which will reveal their collections for I-Share resource sharing.

The new I-Share participants, their three letter CARLI symbols, and their locations are:

  • Carl Sandburg College (CSC), Galesburg
  • Illinois Eastern Community Colleges (IEC), with four locations-Frontier Community College, Fairfield; Wabash Valley College, Mt. Carmel; Olney Central College, Olney; and Lincoln Trail College, Robinson
  • Knox College (KNX), Galesburg
  • Monmouth College (MON), Monmouth
  • Saint Francis Medical Center College of Nursing (SFM), Peoria
  • Trinity International University (TIU), Deerfield

The six institutions migrated a combined total of 721,411 bibliographic records, 898,515 item records and 13,908 patron records from their former automation systems.

I-Share uses the Voyager software from the Ex Libris Group, and runs on computer servers operated by the CARLI consortium office staff. The I-Share Universal Catalog, a union catalog for the participants, includes over 9 million unique titles. During July, CARLI staff will rebuild the I-Share Universal Catalog, and the six new participants’ holdings will be incorporated into the Universal Catalog at that time. Please watch for the I-Share announce email list for more detailed announcements about the Universal Catalog rebuild project. CARLI plans to implement more I-Share libraries in 2008, and details about that implementation round will also be announced shortly.

Syndetic Solutions Subscription Deadline Extended to July 31

In May, I-Share libraries received information on subscribing to catalog enhancement features from Syndetic Solutions. To date, 25 CARLI members have subscribed to Syndetic Solutions features. In order to accommodate other members, the deadline to subscribe has now been extended to July 31, 2007. To order Syndetic Solutions modules, please go to http://www.carli.illinois.edu/mem-prod/I-Share/syndetic07/ and complete the form.

Syndetic Solutions hosts the cover images, reviews and other data on its servers and I-Share retrieves the images by automatically sending a query to Syndetics behind the scenes. The "Click for more information on this title" link in the detailed record will retrieve reviews, tables of contents, author notes, and cover images for all records for which Syndetics has these data, or approximately 2 million records in the I-Share Universal Catalog. Further information may be obtained at http://www.syndetics.com.

CARLI has implemented Syndetic Solutions enhancements in the I-Share Universal Catalog. Where available, cover images are now available in the brief search results view; and cover images, tables of contents, author notes, first chapters & excerpts, summaries & annotations, Choice, Kirkus, and Publishers Weekly reviews are linked to the detailed record.

CARLI members who are not I-Share participants can obtain information about Syndetic Solutions pricing by contacting Jeremy Link at 877-225-6946 or via email. You will need to indicate what ILS you use and provide a count of the bibliographic records in your system.

New Options for Implementing Ex Libris SFX: JumpStart and TotalCare

Interested in implementing the SFX link resolver product but concerned that you don’t have the time or staff to take on implementing and maintaining another system? Do you already have SFX and just haven’t been able to find the time to customize and support it? Ex Libris is now offering CARLI members an alternate implementation solution.  Ex Libris can provide complete start up and ongoing maintenance services for your SFX installation under two new programs called JumpStart and TotalCare, available through an annual subscription.

JumpStart:  Ex Libris will take the subscription data you provide and activate targets and individual titles for all eJournals in the SFX Knowledgebase as well as up to 100 locally created object portfolio entries, and print journals as desired. They will also customize all your public SFX interfaces and display logic based on your needs, and provide you with monthly updates for one year.

After one year of JumpStart service, Ex Libris provides you the choice to take responsibility for your SFX or continue under their support. If you decide to retain Ex Libris’ services for your SFX installation after the first year, you move into the TotalCare program which is renewable on an annual basis. Under TotalCare, Ex Libris will provide full software maintenance of your SFX content including new activations, deletions and other changes based on regular software and KnowledgeBase revisions, and the subscription changes you inform them about.

Interested in learning more? CARLI has scheduled two Web seminars dealing exclusively with JumpStart and TotalCare. Save the date to attend one of these sessions: Thursday, August 2 at 2:00pm or Tuesday, August 7, and 10:00am. Registration information for these events will be available soon.

SFX Overview Webcasts Coming in July

Registration will open soon for two informational Webcasts to be presented by Dave Stout, Ex Libris U.S.A. on Thursday, July 26, 2:00 pm and Tuesday, July 31, 10:00 am. The session will provide an overview Ex Libris’ SFX link server

Attendance at one of these webcasts is required for those libraries considering implementation of SFX this fall. The content of the overview is considered part of the SFX implementation training and will not be repeated during the training sessions. Attendance at this webcast does not automatically register you for implementation training.

For information, visit the CARLI’s SFX information page and the SFX FAQ.

CARLI Annual Membership Meeting—Save the Date

The 2007 CARLI Annual Meeting will be held on Friday, October 26, at the Hilton Garden Inn, Champaign. The keynote speaker will be Sayeed Choudhury, Associate Director for Library Digital Programs and Hodson Director of the Digital Knowledge Center (DKC) of Sheridan Libraries, Johns Hopkins University. The final schedule and registration information will be announced as soon as the details are available.

New CARLI After Hours Phone Number

CARLI members now have just one toll-free telephone number, available 24 x 7, to report problems or seek assistance. All calls for CARLI help, at any hour, should be placed to our toll free number 1-866-904-5843 (or 217-244-7593, if that is a local call for you).  After 5 pm, and on weekends and holidays, callers will have the option of paging a tech support staff person to report a system outage or other serious problem.

Please note that we are not staffed to respond to general inquires after hours; please email general inquiries to support@carli.illinois.edu, and we’ll respond during business hours.

Offering 24 x 7 toll free access to a single CARLI help number is a service that we have long wanted to implement for our members, and we hope that you find it helpful.  Actually, we hope that our systems stay online and working properly, so that you never find the need to call us after hours, but we’re happy to make it simpler for you to do so, should the need arise.

Revised CARLI Digital Collections Collection Development Policy

The Digital Collections User Group (DCUG) is pleased to announce that the revised CARLI Digital Collections Collection Development Policy is now available on the CARLI website.

First created in January 2006 by the Collections Working Group, the CARLI Board requested that DCUG re-examine and revise the policy. This policy addresses those collections that will be stored in CARLI Digital Collections and centrally managed by CARLI.  Libraries are encouraged to plan and develop digital collections so that access to the state's resources is made widely available.  If you have questions regarding this policy or CARLI Digital Collections, please contact support@carli.illinois.edu.

I-Share Updates

Universal Catalog Rebuild

Beginning next week, the CARLI staff will be rebuilding the I-Share Voyager Universal Catalog (UC). The rebuild process is done every year or so to improve search precision by eliminating as many duplicate bibliographic records as possible from the UC, and is expected to take approximately three weeks to complete.

During the rebuild, the UC will be available for searching and placing requests, but after the updates made on Saturday July 7, it will be in a “frozen” status and will not reflect any additions, deletions or changes made to bibliographic records for approximately three weeks. During the UC rebuild, the 71 local I-Share databases will continue to be updated as usual. Item status information displayed in the Universal Catalog is retrieved from the local catalogs and consequently will remain current throughout the rebuild. For detailed information, read the full announcement.

When the rebuild is completed, the holdings of the 6 libraries that have just been added to I-Share will be displayed in the UC and will also be available for requesting through Universal Borrowing. The six new libraries are: Carl Sandburg College, Illinois Eastern Community Colleges, Knox College, Monmouth College, Saint Francis Medical Center College of Nursing, and Trinity International University.

All Voyager services should be available throughout the rebuild, with the exception that all access to the Universal Catalog will be suspended after 5pm on the evening when we will replace the frozen UC with the newly rebuilt copy. Library staff should report any other Voyager system outages or slowdowns, and forward any questions on this project to CARLI’s technical support group either by email to support@carli.illinois.edu or by phoning 1-866-904-5843.

I-Share Users’ Group Seeking Additional Volunteers

Due to additional openings, CARLI is again seeking volunteers to serve on the I-Share Users’ Group. Information about this group including it’s charge may be found on the CARLI website.

Volunteers chosen will either serve a full three year term, July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2010, or complete a one or two year term to fill a vacancy. Only faculty and staff from I-Share libraries may be selected to serve on I-Share committees.

Please volunteer by filling out the committee volunteer form  by July 12, 2007. CARLI committee work may require time and/or travel expenses and staff volunteering for committees should seek appropriate administrative approval before volunteering to serve.
