CARLI Acquiring Sage Deep Backfile

CARLI is pleased to announce that it will acquire perpetual access to the complete Sage Deep Backfile for the benefit of its members. CARLI has negotiated a deeply discounted price for the journal backfile, and will be substantially subsidizing the cost for all Governing, Associate, and Basic members. Pending the conclusion of the contract, access will be available on July 1.

Through SAGE Deep Backfile, participating CARLI consortium members will gain electronic access to the full content of 301 journals, 357,000 issues, and approximately 4,284,000 articles.  Coverage begins with Volume 1, Issue 1, and runs through the last issue of 1998 (content from January 1999 to the present is included in the current subscription).

Deep Backfile Features:

  • Perpetual Access to the Deep Backfile of 301 journals.
  • Access provided via SAGE Journals Online, powered by HighWire Press
  • Journal backfile articles posted in PDF format with XML-based Headers, abstracts and references
  • Enhanced Search Enhanced search features including Quick Search, Advanced Search and Browse by Topic
  • Searchable PDF (OCR)format at 300dpi
  • COUNTER compliant (Release 2) usage statistics
  • SAGE Journal Email Alerts for tables of contents notifications, announcements, and keyword, author, and citation alerts
  • Open URL Linking, and linking to CrossRef, PubMeb®, and ISI Web of Knowledge
  • Toll-free inter-journal linking between citing articles within SAGE Journals Online and High Wire-hosted content
  • Content access safeguarded through arrangements with Portico and CLOCKSS

The complete list of titles in the Sage Deep Backfile is available at on the CARLI web site.

The Sage Deep Backfile represents the first opportunity for CARLI members to participate in the new Shared Contribution Acquisition Program. Approved by the Board of Directors in March 2007, CARLI is providing 60% of the funding for a pool that will be used to purchase electronic resources, with interested member institutions contributing 40% of the funds for the pool.

Before June 8th, each CARLI member will receive an email detailing the specific institutional costs to participate, and their instructions on how to obtain perpetual access to the Sage Deep Backfile. By June 15th, participating libraries will also receive information on possible discounts for current Sage subscriptions.  For additional information, contact support@carli.illinois.edu.

Watch for Changes @ www.carli.illinois.edu

Responses to the member survey included great feedback from you about changes you'd like to see on the CARLI web site. Improving the site search was first on the list. We're happy to announce a new web search engine has been installed site wide. Now you'll be able to search .php, .html, .pdf, .xls, .doc file types. In addition, the web pages now include a "bread crumb" trail located below the CARLI logo, that indicates where you are in the site.

In the next few months, CARLI staff will be working on other changes to improve accessibility and navigation. If you have any questions or comments email support@carli.illinois.edu.

We Want to See You on the CARLI Home Page

Send us photos of your library and your staff in action and we'll add them to the rotating photos on the CARLI home page. And remember the release forms—we'll need them for photos that include anyone other than library staff. Send photos and questions to support@carli.illinois.edu.

Update on CARLI Strategic Planning

Beginning with the member survey emailed to you in January, CARLI has been working with the Library Research Center at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to gather information about current and future CARLI products, services, and communications. The process has included several stages in order to involve as many library staff as possible in the information gathering.

The process includes the following steps:
Online survey: The CARLI member survey was emailed in January to all subscribers of the ANNOUNCE listserv. Over 1200 people received the survey, with 450+ surveys returned.

Member Focus Groups: A total of four member focus groups were held in April in Chicago, Springfield and Champaign, with staff from member libraries randomly selected from the original survey email list. The random selection was used to make sure that our input was statistically valid, and that a variety of viewpoints were solicited.

Governing Member Library Directors’ Meetings: CARLI Board members and the Executive Director will hold meetings in June with the Governing member library directors. The group will review the survey and focus group findings, and discuss ways to work together.

CARLI Board Planning Retreat: In mid-July the CARLI Board will have a planning retreat to complete the process and make the final plans to move forward. This meeting will include both the newest Board members whose terms will begin on July 1, and the members whose terms will have just expired on June 30.

Stay tuned for more information later this summer. If you have any questions about the process contact support@carli.illinois.edu with the subject line: CARLI Strategic Planning.

I-Share Updates

Voyager Client Timeouts

Over the summer, CARLI tech support staff will be acquiring and installing hardware that will allow a reconfiguration of the network architecture. This change to our network infrastructure is expected to reduce the number of timeout problems with Voyager clients.

Voyager client timeouts caused by local campus firewalls will continue to be an issue following the change to the CARLI network. CARLI staff are working on a method to identify local firewall issues so that libraries may work on solutions within their campus networks.

The Instruction Team Wants to Hear From You

The Users' Group Instruction Team needs your feedback regarding current instructional practices, as well as CARLI-sponsored services, resources, and events relating to end user instruction. Please share this survey with anyone at your institution who may be interested in instruction; we welcome feedback from multiple respondents at the same library.

Please take a few moments to complete this brief, anonymous survey by Friday, June 1st.

If you experience technical difficulties or have any questions please email support@carli.illinois.edu.

Updated End User Tutorials Available

CARLI I-Share libraries have expressed interest in the development of end-user tutorials for I-Share. The I-Share Users' Group (IUG) Instruction Team was charged with this task and is pleased to announce the completion of a revised set of tutorials covering various aspects of using I-Share. The tutorials are based in the I-Share catalog and were created with Camtasia Studio(tm) software.

Topics covered include: searching using the Quick Search and Advanced Search screens; searching by title, author, and by journal title; using My Account; how to print and email records; borrowing through I-Share; and several other tutorials focused on particular types of searches (using partial information, by/about a Person, finding items in collected works).

The IUG OPAC Team has created embedded links from within I-Share so that users can view the tutorials in a particular context in the catalog.

More information for I-Share librarians and staff, links to the finished tutorials, as well as scripts and other information, are available at: http://www.carli.illinois.edu/mem-serv/mem-train/movies/opac-libs.html.

End users may access tutorials by following links within the I-Share catalog itself, or online at: http://www.carli.illinois.edu/mem-serv/mem-train/movies/opac-mov.html.

Please contact support@carli.illinois.edu if you have any questions about these tutorials.

CARLI After-Hours Support Number Changing July 2

Beginning July 2, 2007, libraries should use the CARLI toll-free number, 866-904-5843, to contact us at any time. If you have the current after-hours AITS Help Desk Number in any of your local documents (or on a Post-It note on your monitor), change it to 866-904-5843.

If you’d like to have the CARLI contact information on magnets, or vinyl screen decals, contact support@carli.illinois.edu.

CARLI Licenses Syndetic Solutions for the I-Share Universal Catalog

Syndetic Solutions enhancements were recently implemented in the I-Share Universal Catalog. Where available, cover images are now available in the brief search results view, and cover images, tables of contents, author notes, first chapters & excerpts, summaries & annotations, Choice, Kirkus, and Publishers Weekly reviews are linked to the detailed record.

Syndetic Solutions enhances library online catalogs with specialized, quality bibliographic data. Syndetics hosts the cover images, reviews and other data on its servers and I-Share retrieves the images by automatically sending an ISBN query to Syndetics behind the scenes. The "Click for more information on this title" link in the detailed record will retrieve reviews, tables of contents, author notes, and cover images for all records for which Syndetics has these data, or approximately 2 million records in the I-Share Universal Catalog.

CARLI has negotiated discounted pricing for access to the Syndetics data for I-Share local catalogs. Customized pricing information has been sent to the directors of all I-Share libraries. For more information, email support@carli.illinois.edu.

Portico Discounts Available to CARLI Member Libraries

CARLI has signed a letter of understanding with Portico, a not-for-profit electronic archiving service offering a permanent archive of electronic scholarly journals. Launched in 2002 as a project of JSTOR, Portico was established to address the scholarly community's critical need for a reliable means to preserve scholarly e-journals.

As members of a cooperating consortium, all CARLI libraries are eligible to receive a 5% reduction in their Annual Archive Support payments. In addition to the consortia savings, libraries initiating support with Portico in 2007 will be recognized as a Portico Archive Founder and will receive 10% savings on their Annual Archive Support payment in each of the first five years of their participation. This savings will be added to the 5% consortia savings.

CARLI libraries that are current Portico participants include Northwestern University, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, University of Chicago, University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Illinois at Springfield, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Portico provides all libraries supporting the archive with campus-wide access to archived content when titles are no longer available from the publisher or other source, or when a publisher stops operations, ceases to publish a title, no longer offers back issues, or suffers a catastrophic and sustained failure of their delivery platform. Portico also provides a reliable means to secure perpetual access, if participating publishers choose to designate Portico as a provider of post-cancellation access.

For more information and to find out how to join with Portico, visit http://www.portico.org/libraries/.
