I-Share Hits 10 Millionth Resource Sharing Transaction

I-Share logged its 10 millionth resource sharing transaction on March 17, 2007 when DePaul University in Chicago loaned The Syntopicon: An Index to The Great Ideas to a borrower at Augustana College in Rock Island. The title, a 2-volume index by Mortimer Adler published as volumes 2 and 3 of Great Books of the Western World is one of over 9 million unique titles and 32 million items available through I-Share. I-Share library resource sharing dates back to 1980 when the University of Illinois' Library Computer System (LCS) was extended to serve 12 other institutions including DePaul University. Augustana joined I-Share in 2003.

Bernie Sloan Retires from CARLI

Bernie Sloan has announced his retirement effective April 1, 2007 after nearly 30 years of service.  Bernie is currently serving as Senior Library Information Systems Consultant. He has devoted his career to expanding library resource sharing in Illinois libraries; a commitment marked this month by I-Share’s 10 millionth resource-sharing transaction.

Bernie joined the CARLI staff well before it was known as CARLI, and even before CARLI’s predecessor organization ILCSO (the Illinois Library Computer Systems Organization) became known by that name. Bernie was hired by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign library in 1977 to work on a project to automate the library’s massive card catalog. The project’s vision was from the outset, broader than the UIUC library, and Bernie continued on the library staff through 1981 as the coordinator of what was then referred to as the Statewide Library Computer System (LCS). By 1980, LCS was serving twelve Illinois academic libraries in addition to the University of Illinois libraries. Support for the LCS project moved to the University of Illinois’ administrative computing division in 1981 and Bernie continued with the project, playing many roles—documentation officer, membership coordinator, trainer, and even help desk.

The project continued to expand to additional libraries, a full MARC record-based online catalog was added to supplement the brief records of LCS, additional staff were added, and by 1988, a separate Illinois Library Computer Systems Office was established to coordinate the fiscal, membership and user services roles. Bernie served as the first director of the ILCSO Office, serving in that capacity through 1993. During that timeframe, Bernie worked closely with J. David Stewart, former Assistant Vice President for Planning and Budgeting, University of Illinois, to expand the funding base of the organization that by then served 39 member institutions. Bernie played a key role in launching projects to provide open dial access to ILLINET Online (as LCS had been renamed), to license electronic resources for member libraries, and to identify a commercial system to replace the aging underpinnings of ILLINET Online.

In addition to his work with ILCSO, Bernie worked with J. David Stewart to secure initial funding for the Illinois Digital Academic Library (IDAL). Once funding was obtained for IDAL Bernie coordinated the RFP process that eventually selected EBSCO as the vendor to provide fully subsidized full-text journal article databases to all Illinois higher education institutions.

When ILCSO consolidated its operations with two other consortia to become CARLI in 2005, Bernie continued to serve as Senior Library Information Systems Consultant, providing guidance on consortial governance, fiscal and policy matters. CARLI now has 124 member institutions, serving 89% of the higher education students in Illinois. I-Share, as ILLINET Online was renamed after the merger, has grown to include over 9 million bibliographic records from 65 libraries. Six additional libraries will be added to I-Share during 2007.

Bernie is the author of Linked Systems for Resource Sharing (Boston: G.K. Hall, 1990) and many articles in the library literature and is a well-known contributor to many library related electronic forums. He is noted for his work in the areas of resource sharing, and in recent years, virtual reference service. He was awarded the Illinois Library Association’s Hugh Atkinson Award in 1996.

Outside work, Bernie has been active in a variety of environmental concerns including local and regional Audubon and Sierra Clubs. He holds a bachelors degree in political science from Saint Joseph’s College, Rensselaer, Indiana, a masters’ in library science from the University of Illinois, and has done doctoral work in library science at the University of Illinois. His wife, Sharon Stoerger, is a doctoral student in Library and Information Science at Indiana University. He has two sons, Sam and Zack (who both live in Salt Lake City), and a new grandson Elijah (Sam’s son) who he intends to enjoy spending time with in his retirement.

Nominations for CARLI Board Elections to Open April 6

CARLI is seeking nominations for candidates to fill six seats on the CARLI Board of Directors. The nomination period will be open Friday, April 6 through Friday, April 27, 2007. All employees of CARLI member institutions are eligible to serve on the Board of Directors. Additional details and the online nomination form will be available beginning Friday, April 6th.

One Board member will be elected by CARLI Governing members from each of three specified constituencies (public universities, community colleges, and private colleges and universities), and one Board member will be elected at-large by the Governing members as a whole. Successful candidates will serve three-year terms beginning July 1, 2007.

In addition, CARLI is seeking nominations for one additional at-large seat, being vacated by the retirement of At-large representative Mary Munroe. This term will run for 1 year, July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008.

Nominations are also being sought for one voting member of the Board to be elected from and by the Associate Member sector. The Associate Member representative will serve a three-year term beginning July 1, 2007. Any employee of any Associate Member library is eligible for this position. View the list of Associate members at http://www.carli.illinois.edu/mem-libs/Membership-list.pdf.

Election balloting will begin Monday, May 14, closing on Friday, June 1. Library directors will receive voting instructions via email in early May.

Spring Database Subscription Period Now Open

Pricing for the FY2008 electronic database subscriptions is now available to all CARLI member libraries. The Spring selection period will run from March 26 to April 30. The following vendors are participating this year:

  • ABC-CLIO
  • Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (CSA)
  • Chronicle of Higher Education (NEW)
  • Columbia University Press
  • EBSCO Publishing
  • Gale (NEW)
  • Lexis Nexis
  • Newsbank (NEW)
  • OCLC
  • SOLINET (Lexis Nexis Academic)
  • STAT-USA (U.S. Dept. of Commerce)
  • H. W. Wilson

The program has a couple of changes of note this spring. Only CARLI Governing, Associate and Basic member institutions will be eligible to participate in the database brokering program. Institutions that joined CARLI as Basic members will be assessed a handling fee of $50 for each database selected. Ovid and ProQuest will no longer offer pricing for core databases through CARLI.

Details about the program and how to access the electronic resources selection system are available at http://www.carli.illinois.edu/news/35/65.html. For additional information, to find out how to become an eligible CARLI member, or to report problems, contact support@carli.illinois.edu with the subject line: 2007 database brokering.

Illinois Immersion ’07—Application Deadline March 30

Apply NOW to attend Illinois Immersion ’07, July 13-18, at Illinois State University.  Space is still available for this program, so applications will be accepted from Illinois and non-Illinois residents until Friday, March 30, 2007.  Online applications must be received by 3:00 p.m. CDT; those delivered by hand or by mail must be received prior to the CARLI office closing at 4:30 p.m. CDT. Please use a 9” x 12” envelope so the application is not folded. A waitlist will be established.

Why does the program cost so much?

Well, the program does seem pricey compared to previously offered CARLI continuing education programs; however, the ACRL national program on information literacy with the same curriculum is more than twice the price.  CARLI is hosting this program along with support from the Illinois State Library to bring this Institute to Illinois.

Are there any scholarships available?

The Illinois Library Systems Directors Organization (ILSDO) has announced six matching grants for Illinois Immersion ’07.  The six grants are $300 each.  The grants will be awarded to Illinois community college librarians to participate in the ACRL Information Literacy Immersion Program.

More information about the program and application instructions may be found at http://www.carli.illinois.edu/immersion07.html. If you have any questions, please contact Elizabeth Clarage, Director of Collections Services, CARLI, or Lorna Engels, Library Systems Coordinator, CARLI, for any additional information. They also may be contacted by phone at (toll-free) 866-904-5843.

2007 CARLI Annual Meeting Scheduled

The 2007 CARLI Annual meeting will be held on Friday, October 26, at the Hilton Garden Inn, Champaign. The keynote speaker will be Sayeed Choudhury Associate Director for Library Digital Programs and Hodson Director of the Digital Knowledge Center (DKC) of Sheridan Libraries, Johns Hopkins University. The final schedule and registration information will be announced as soon as the details are available.

CARLI to Sponsor IACRL Award and Luncheon Speaker

CARLI is pleased to support IACRL, the Illinois Association of College and Research Libraries, in honoring the contributions of individuals who enhance Illinois academic libraries, and contributing to the professional and career development of all academic library personnel.

Beginning in 2007 CARLI will sponsor the financial award for the IACRL Academic Librarian of the Year award. The award, established in 1985 recognizes an Illinois librarian who is making an outstanding statewide contribution to academic or research librarianship and to library development.

The IACRL luncheon at the 2007 ILA Annual Conference will feature Dr. Howard Rosenbaum, Associate Professor of Information Science, and the director of the Masters of Information Science program in the School of Library and Information Science at Indiana University.

I-Share Updates

Registration Open for Resource Sharing Forum

Registration for the IUG Resource Sharing Forum, re-scheduled to April 18, 2007 at Kankakee Community College, is now open. Even if you had previously registered for the originally scheduled date in February, you must re-register for the April Forum.

Submit your registration and view the day’s agenda.

Access to the audio portions of the forum will be available via conference call, starting at 10 a.m. If you choose the conference call option, connection details will be forwarded to you via email after registration closes for this event on Friday, April 13.

IUG is also introducing its new mentor-for-a-day concept at this forum. You can read more about it via the link ["willing to introduce"] on the registration form. Since this mentor/mentee idea implies direct association, CARLI encourages on-site attendance at this forum.

Analyzer Installation Update

In 2006, CARLI acquired a license for Voyager: Analyzer, the new web-based reporting module for the Voyager Library Management System. Although we expected that Analyzer would be available to I-Share library staff in spring 2007, CARLI’s Analyzer installation has been delayed due to a licensing problem.

At the time of the purchase, Endeavor (which has since been acquired by Ex Libris) planned to install the product on three training databases while training the CARLI staff to perform the remaining installations for the 65 I-Share libraries’ training and production databases. This installation training approach was intended to save CARLI significant costs while developing CARLI staff expertise in the product.

Ex Libris has recently discovered that its license agreement with Cognos, the company which owns the underlying technology of Analyzer, does not allow them to re-distribute Cognos’ installation tools to sites that buy Analyzer. Ex Libris is addressing this by building an application that will allow customer initiated installations of Analyzer. Ex Libris anticipates this product will be available to CARLI staff by late June 2007. During this same timeframe, Ex Libris is also addressing some functionality issues in Analyzer to tighten the security between databases in consortial installations like I-Share.

Following receipt and testing of the installation application, CARLI will  update I-Share libraries on Analyzer’s status and plans for its deployment.

New Titles List for I-Share Local Catalogs Available

CARLI is pleased to be able to offer I-Share libraries the ability to deploy the Voyager New Titles List in their local catalog. The “New in I-Share” list was released in the I-Share Universal Catalog (the union catalog component of Voyager) in December 2006. The local new titles list feature will allow I-Share libraries to provide their patrons with an easy way to access materials recently added to their home library collection.

The new titles list allows people to select the “new since” interval (last month, 3 weeks ago, two weeks ago, 1 week ago, yesterday), the sort order (author, title, call number), a library-defined location filter, and to enter any keywords they choose to refine their retrieval. The results that are returned include the author, title (with a hotlink to the full record in your local catalog), call number, and location of the item. For those who use an RSS reader, the results page offers an RSS feed.

The new titles list relies on a report query that is run daily against CARLI’s Voyager reports server. This query looks at the create/update date in all holdings records (the MFHD, MARC Format Holdings Data) and selects those items that have had MFHD’s added or updated in the last 30 days. The resulting report is queried in turn by the new titles program and returns results based on the user’s criteria.

The new titles list was based on code originally developed by Michael Doran of the University of Texas at Arlington (see http://rocky.uta.edu/doran/autolist/  for more information about Michael’s work). CARLI staff have modified Doran’s code to optimize performance in a consortial environment.

The new titles list may be deployed within Voyager’s WebVoyáge web catalog or as a separate link on a library webpage (or both).  Contact support@carli.illinois.edu to add a new titles list button to the WebVoyáge toolbar of your local catalog. Libraries that have customized their catalog’s look and feel can develop their own button and add it to their toolbar. Use this url to provide a direct link to the list from a library web page: http://i-share.carli.illinois.edu/newbooks/newbooks.cgi?library=XXXdb (where XXX is the 3 letter code for the library).

To facilitate customization of the new titles list, CARLI created a Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) editor that allows libraries to define their own look and feel. To access the CSS editor go to http://develop.carli.illinois.edu/ilcso/cgi-bin/newbooks/test_css/edit.

Next Voyager Upgrade Planned for December 2007

I-Share is currently running on Voyager version 6.1. Version 6.2 has been released, pre-release “field” testing of version 6.5 will begin soon by ExLibris’ test sites, and ExLibris  plans to release version 7 by the end of the calendar year. It is not possible to upgrade our Voyager software while implementing new I-Share libraries, so CARLI’s Voyager will need to remain on version 6.1 at least until after the six libraries in the I-Share “Class of 2007” are online in July 2007. At this time, we plan to do the next upgrade to Voyager during the December 2007-January 2008 winter break.

While details are not yet available on version 7, none of the next 3 versions should be as big a project as the upgrade to version 6, which CARLI performed in summer 2006. That upgrade required every bibliographic, holding, and authority record in the database to be recreated in the Unicode format to support non-Roman character sets. No task of that magnitude is foreseen in the near future of Voyager.

A more detailed announcement on the timing and version for the Voyager upgrade will be made by August 2007.

Simple Repairs for Circulating Book Collections: A Hands-On Workshop

This one-day workshop will give participants an opportunity to learn appropriate archival-quality repairs from trained professionals.  The workshop is geared to any staff in CARLI member libraries who want to learn how to perform simple, quick repairs that don’t require much space or equipment. The repairs covered in this workshop are not appropriate for special collections materials. Attendance is limited to 30 attendees at each of the two workshops. A registration fee will be charged.

CARLI will offer this workshop at Northern Illinois University, DeKalb. April 25, 2007, and at the Illinois State Library, May 1, 2007. More information on registration will be on the CARLI website soon.
