E-Resources Update

Interest Survey for FY 2008 Database Brokering Now Open

CARLI is conducting a survey of member interest for FY 2008 database subscription pricing. The survey will remain open through February 23, 2007.

The results of the survey will be sent to participating vendors to obtain discounted pricing for the Spring database selection cycle beginning in March. There is no limit to the number of surveys that may come from a member institution. CARLI staff will collate results before sending them to vendors for price quotations. Please note that only institutions that have filed CARLI Membership Agreements will be eligible to take part in database brokering this spring. If you have any questions about the survey, email support@carli.illinois.edu.

CARLI Database Brokering Program Changes for FY 2008

Academic and research libraries in Illinois have now selected their membership level in CARLI. Although membership officially begins on July 1, 2007, the membership category selected by each institution will have an impact on the Spring Database Brokering process.

  • Governing and Associate members will be able to participate in the Database Brokering Program without service fees or restrictions.
  • Basic members will be assessed a processing fee of $50 for each database selected through the Database Brokering Program.
  • Non-members will not be eligible to participate in the Database Brokering Program. More information on membership categories and fees is available at http://www.carli.illinois.edu/about/about-memcat.html.

The CARLI membership list is available at http://www.carli.illinois.edu/mem-libs/Membership-list.pdf.

Based on recommendations from the Electronic Resources Working Group and accepted by the Board of Directors in January, CARLI will begin streamlining the selection process for the Database Brokering Program this spring. Beginning with FY 2008, the following criteria will be used to determine the databases offered through the Database Brokering Program.

  • The databases on the Interest Survey represent a list of potential resources.
  • CARLI will not solicit pricing if fewer than five (5) member institutions indicate an interest in a specific database.
  • CARLI may not offer pricing if a vendor is unwilling to offer a discount of at least 10% to CARLI members.
  • These criteria may be waived if access to a database may only be obtained through a consortium or if the staff determines that there is a compelling reason to do so.

NOTE: Each library expressing interest in a database on the survey or is a current subscriber (through CARLI) to a database that CARLI doesn't offer in the FY 2008 selection cycle will be notified in a timely manner. This will allow time for a library to make arrangements to subscribe to such databases directly from the vendor.

Apply Now for Illinois Immersion’07

What is the Information Literacy Immersion Institute?

Illinois Immersion '07, July 13-18, 2007 will provide you with the intellectual tools and practical techniques to help your institution build or enhance its instruction program.  The program will offer two tracks. The Teacher Track will be useful for enhancing, refreshing, or extending your instruction skills. The Program Track is for those interested in developing and managing an institutional information literacy program.

Illinois Immersion ’07 Regional Information Literacy Institute is sponsored by ACRL's Institute for Information Literacy, and will be hosted by CARLI with additional support from the Illinois State Library.

I applied to the National program and didn't get accepted, can I still apply to the Regional program?

Yes, you may apply to the Regional program if you did not get accepted to the National Program, the National and Regional programs are administered separately. If you wish to be considered an applicant for the Regional Program (Illinois Immersion  ’07), you need to apply to the Regional Institute. The application is very similar to the National program, but not exactly the same.

What does my registration fee cover?

Registration fees include:

  • Tuition and an extensive notebook of program materials and resources
  • Access to WebCT course
  • Private electronic discussion forum of all participants
  • All meals and twice-daily refreshments during the 4.5-day program

How can I pay for it? Do I have to pay right now?

As an applicant, you (or your institution) are responsible for paying for the program. Individuals from Illinois institutions will have the option of paying either the entire program cost this fiscal year or a $100 deposit (and any housing costs) with the balance being paid after July 1.  Those not from Illinois need to pay for the Institute when accepted into the program.

Where do I stay during the Institute?

Lodging is available at the residence halls on the Illinois State University campus. This option is available to you when you’re accepted into the program. The nightly rate in the residence hall is  $35.68 or $178.40 for all five nights. Or, you may make other accommodation arrangements at any local hotel or motel.

Why is the application so long?

The enrollment for the Immersion Institute is limited to 90 participants. The program track has approximately 30 participants while the teacher track has approximately 60 participants. Because of the limited enrollment, a competitive application process was developed as a mechanism to select individuals into the program.

What is the application deadline?

The deadline for Illinois residents to apply and have preferred consideration is February 28, 2007.  As space allows, applications will be accepted (including non-Illinois residents) until Friday, March 30, 2007.

Where can I find additional information?

Detailed information is available at http://www.carli.illinois.edu/immersion07.html.
