Help Shape Future CARLI Programs & Services

Tell us what you think about CARLI. Complete the web survey you received from the Library Research Center this week. Email all your colleagues who work with CARLI products or services and urge them to participate in the survey, too. Your feedback will help us evaluate our current services and identify future priorities and communication needs.

Save 10% on Your Governing Member Fees in 2007

Return your membership form by January 31 and become a founding Governing Member. You’ll save 10% off your first year membership fees.

Access to The Chronicle Of Higher Ed is now available for all who have returned membership forms. If you haven’t received your access information contact support@carli.illinois.edu.

WorldCat Collection Analysis Individual Product Discount

CARLI is pleased to announce discounted consortium pricing for the WorldCat Individual Collection Analysis product for 2007. Eleven-month subscriptions for 2007 will begin February 1.

WorldCat Collection Analysis allows you to evaluate your collection through comparisons with other WorldCat libraries.Final pricing is dependent upon the number of subscribing institutions. For more information contact support@carli.illinois.edu. For more information on the product, visit the OCLC website.

Is It Time for an SFX Implementers’ Forum?

CARLI staff has been reviewing the responses to the SFX Training Needs survey and looking at the SFX customizations that CARLI libraries have applied to their instances. We think it might be time to hold a first-ever CARLI SFX Implementers' Forum. Do you agree?

Your CARLI colleagues have done some very interesting things with:

  • the look and feel of the SFX user interfaces;
  • SFX display logic;
  • SFX usage statistics;
  • promoting use of print/microform holdings via SFX;
  • integrating (or even just dreaming about integrating) SFX with other library web services like WebFeat or CONTENTdm.

For more information or to volunteer for the planning group go to:  http://www.carli.illinois.edu/news/22/56.html.

It’s not too late to fill out an SFX Training Needs Survey.

Illinois Immersion ’07—Is It Right for You?

What is the Information Literacy Immersion Institute?

Illinois Immersion ’07 is a four-and-a-half day program, July 13-18, 2007, that provides intensive information literacy training and education for instruction librarians. The Immersion institute offers 2 tracks, the Teacher Track and the Program Track.

Who should apply?

If you’re interested in enhancing, refreshing, or extending your instruction skills, the Teacher Track of the Immersion Institute is for you. The Teacher Track will be useful for you if:

  • You have little or no experience as a teacher or if you have experience but would benefit from a focus on the fundamentals.
  • You want to understand more about learning theory, and how to design lessons and assignments that accommodate different learning styles.
  • You want an opportunity to practice and receive feedback on your teaching.
  • You need to understand the role of assessment in improving your teaching techniques and the design of lessons and assignments.
  • You want to identify and build on your leadership skills.

If you and your institution are interested in developing and managing an institutional information literacy program, the Program Track of the Immersion Institute is for you. The Program Track will be useful for you if:

  • You have some knowledge of learning theory, pedagogy, and assessment.
  • You have some experience as a teacher.
  • You have program management responsibility.
  • You’re interested in changing your program to focus on information literacy.
  • You need to understand the role of assessment related to a whole curriculum and to gaining campus support.
  • You want to strengthen your skills as a campus leader for information literacy.

What is the application deadline?

The deadline for Illinois residents to apply and have preferred consideration is February 28, 2007. As space allows, applications will be accepted (including non-Illinois residents) until Friday, March 30, 2007.

Where can I find additional information?

Detailed information is available at: http://www.carli.illinois.edu/immersion07.html.

I-Share Updates

Register for the Resource Sharing Forum

Registration for the Winter Forum, scheduled for February 14, 2007 at Kankakee Community College is now open.  Access to the audio portions of the forum will be available via conference call.

IUG is introducing its new mentor-for-a-day concept at this forum. Read more about it via the link ["willing to introduce"] on the registration form.

Volunteer for the I-Share Users Group

CARLI is seeking volunteers to fill an opening on the IUG's Instruction Team.  The appointment will run through 2008, and can be renewed. Read the charge to the IUG Instruction Team. Experience using Camtasia is desirable, but faculty and staff members from all I-Share libraries with all levels and types of instruction experience are encouraged to volunteer.

To volunteer, please fill out the web form by Wednesday, January 31.

Find Items Added to the Universal Catalog

Now you can easily identify items newly added to I Share, the Voyager Universal Catalog, which currently contains the holdings of 65 CARLI libraries. Try it out or click the new “New in I-Share” button within I Share itself. Search for specific title or author keywords, or leave that box blank and see everything new to I Share libraries in the last 1-30 days. Click on a title you’ve found to view the full record in the I-Share catalog, the item’s location and availability, and, where allowed, to place requests. Set up RSS feeds of your favorite searches to receive an update automatically when new titles are added.

Soon I-Share libraries will have the option to offer a version of this service that is scoped to their own collection, and that may be accessed from the library’s own Voyager catalog interface or library web page. Details will be announced later in January.
