CARLI Book Digitization Initiative
FAQ from discussion Friday November 2, 2007
- What if you have already participated in a digitization project and your proposal is a continuation of that work? IS it OK to ask for a continuation via this CARLI project?
Answer: YES it is OK, you are not limited by previous awards but be sure that the proposal meets all other criteria
- When planning for this work, what costs should the participant be aware of?
Answer: There may be some direct and indirect handling and shipping costs. Delivery options have not been decided upon as yet. There may be options whereby it is free if via the CARLI delivery service or perhaps some shared costs if courier. Hand delivery is an option a participant may wish to explore but things like gas mileage would not be covered. Participants should count on covering the costs to retrieve, pack, and then unpack and shelve all materials sent for digitization as well as any costs associated with identifying the materials chosen.
- How many volumes would comprise a list?
Answer: If one is all you have but it is critical, then one is fine! The TOTAL number of volumes covered by this initiative would be 2500-3000.
- The theme is Illinois Culture and Heritage but how loosely can that be interpreted? For example what if you have an important unique collection in Illinois but the content is not all about Illinois? And what about a unique journal published in Illinois but that covers lots of subjects?
Answer: The Collections Working group review will look at theses issues. In general, the scope of the material should cover something about Illinois Culture and heritage and a journal published in Illinois would likely cover a significant amount of Illinois subject matter and if a unique and important title would likely be candidate. A separate collection however that has no Illinois subject content is not likely to be a candidate.
- Can a bound serial be included?
Answer: Yes
- What about a schedule for book delivery from the participants?
Answer: That will all be outlined once the participants and their collections are chosen.
- The initiative is a pilot project now, Will this program continue?
Answer: It is hoped for yes, CARLI will see how the project develops, proposals received, and interest generated.
- What about other formats of material other then those listed in the handout?
Answer: If the project continues, it may be expanded to cover other formats depending on the material and the potential to digitize them.
- What about bound scores?
Answer: Yes, if they fit the criteria (including being free from copyright).
- Will the list of material sent be reviewed by CWG title by title to see what merits inclusion?
Answer: No, the theme and rational to support how the collection proposed meets the theme will be reviewed for inclusion in the project.
- Is deduping required? I.e. check to see if title already available digitally
Answer: Probably not but as UIUC is doing a lot of Illinois material now, please try to check that website.
