CONTENTdm Server Upgrade to Version 5.4

ANNOUNCEMENT - February 14, 2011

The server migration to Linux and the upgrade to CONTENTdm software version 5.4 has been successfully completed! All user account access has been re-enabled and libraries may once again use the Project Client and Web Administration.

ANNOUNCEMENT - January 20. 2011

Summary:
On Friday, February 4, 2011, CARLI will begin migrating the server running CARLI Digital Collections to a new server with the Linux operating system and upgrading the server software to CONTENTdm version 5.4. Project Clients are not affected. We expect the process to be completed no later than February 14, 2011.

Before the upgrade begins, all digital items in Project Clients will need to be uploaded to the server and be Approved and Indexed into their respective Collections.

During the upgrade, a read-only copy of CARLI Digital Collections, current as of 5pm on Feb. 4, will be available for users to view and search at the regular URL: http://collections.carli.illinois.edu

During the upgrade, it will not be possible to add new digital items or edit existing items in CONTENTdm Web Administration, no new collections will be created, collections previously unpublished cannot be newly published, and no edits to collection home pages will be made.

Details:
All digital items must be uploaded to the server from all Projects in all Project Clients on your local PCs and approved and indexed in CONTENTdm Web Administration by 5pm on Feb. 4, 2011. Any digital items that are not uploaded to the server by that time may be lost.

There will be no changes to the Project Client software, so once library staff access is restored after the upgrade, library staff can resume work as usual using their existing Project Clients. Libraries should always be using the most recent version of the Project Client; currently that is version 5.4.1.

During the migration and upgrade of CARLI’s CONTENTdm server:
• No new digital items can be added to existing collections.
• No changes can be made to existing digital items.
• No new collections can be created in CARLI Digital Collections.
• Currently unpublished existing collections cannot change from unpublished to published, but unpublished collections will not be lost. They will be available for publishing after the upgrade.
• No changes can be made to collection home pages or CQRs embedded on collection home pages.
• A read-only copy of CARLI Digital Collections will be available for searching and viewing items at http://collections.carli.illinois.edu. It will contain all items and metadata as of 5pm on Friday, Feb. 4, 2011.

Because the process of migrating to new server hardware and upgrading the CONTENTdm software involves many steps, we are unsure exactly how long the process will take and wish to ensure sufficient time to successfully complete all tasks. CARLI staff will strive to bring the system back online in the shortest possible amount of time and will notify libraries if the process is completed before Feb. 14.

CARLI’s CONTENTdm installation is presently running software version 5.1 on a Solaris server. OCLC has discontinued support for the Solaris operating system, so this service needs to be moved to a supported Linux server. We will take this opportunity to upgrade to the latest version of the CONTENTdm software at the same time. This migration and upgrade project will put CARLI in the best possible position to evaluate and test CONTENTdm version 6 when it is released by OCLC later this year.

PROJECT CLIENT SOFTWARE

The current version of the CONTENTdm Project Client is version 5.4.1. This version should be used both before and after the February upgrade is completed.
